I've never seen Uni present anything actually rare in stereo. Mind you,
it's all relative. What's rare to Uni may be common to me. So I've often
noticed that what he calls "rare" I've had on my shelf for decades.
As for Green Onions, I believe it was only recorded in glorious mono. The
stereo probably would have stunk anyway (pun intended) - lacked the punch
of the mono hit. I believe there was an electronically reprocessed stereo
version released in 1968 (suitable only for Uni's unenhanced ears).

there is little competition, since stereo is only favored by maybe 20%

that's why it's always a good idea to keep a copy of the original 45,
even if it's just a scratchy rip recorded to your computer as a
reference. I went to a record convention last year and it was the
usual collectors fighting over the same old copies of worn out
collectibles. It's fun to go to a convention and "slum It'" once in a
awhile- just buy a bunch of cheap crappy condition 45s for no more
than10 to 25 cents a copy - one dealer had a big box of 60s soul 45s
under his table for 10 cents each - the labels were all marked, and
the records were not in great shape, but they didn't look all that bad
either - there was a lot of Stax records and I bought about 75 - see
how much just one from a mail order dealer costs - I've ripped a few
into the computer and the sound quality is surprisingly good- and
guaranteed it's the original version.

SFB has given you his typical answer. Sometimes his reply is that "it's
around here somewhere; I'll look for it" & you never hear any more from him
on the subject. Usually he will not admit a source because all that he has
is a mono snippet that he has manipulated with software. Such as the time
he was bragging about a Gene Vincent stereo version that only he had. All
that he'd done was take a stereo backing track (which was easily available)
& mix it with the mono version of the song. Yeah, he was the only one who
had it & nobody else wanted it!

The version on The Complete Stax-Volt Singles CD doesn't fade in. There's a
clip on youtube where someone is playing the song directly from an Atlantic
lp & it fades in there as well.

Excuse me, but I mixed that because the official stereo version does not
include studio talk, and I enjoy hearing what went on behind the scenes,
rather than what butcher edit someone felt was appropriate! I purchase a
Rhino's - Dick Bartley series CD, it contains a stereo version of some
song, but, Jesus, it's missing overdubs! I buy another CD from abroad,
it was great to hear the song again, but it's so near mono echoy, that
someone manipulated in a hit version. But I look abroad again and find
the actual two track (stereo) master they used! I depend upon the guru
who composed the EMI series, only to find he shortchanged me in stereo!
Yeah, right, there's stereo experts out there, alright!
As I wrote before, only a small crowd applauds stereo, this is why I
always find the same few people mastering it for CD! Mono may not be too
bad with stereo speakers, but with stereo headphones, it sounds so darn
bland! No wonder why major radio stations are divorcing themselves from
this music, it sounds so antiquated in monophonic!
I tell one record company what the published was one of my favorite
songs, but mentioned it would have been nice to hear it in stereo. What
do they do, they give me the contents from the two track session tape,
but, I guess, because they feared upsetting "original sound" mono fans,
they made sure to publish it in bland mono!
Forgive me for not remembering every CD that I "rip" a stereo version
from! I go through CDs faster than wildfire!

Stax, what ever name they fled to these days, issues more than one
Booker T & The MG's songs that sounds like it was discovered floating in
a bottom of a toilet. Stax had others do their work (not a very
intelligent crew, you know). I can't help it if they had no need for
stereo Booker T. Cry to them, not me!

Interesting... the version of Green Onions that came out on the STAX
50th Anniversary set from Concord does not fade up and is in mono.
Stax masters prior to 1968(I think)are controlled by Atlantic aka
Warner Music Group aka Rhino while post 1968 releases are controlled
by Concord who purchased Fantasy Records a couple years ago. As
history goes, STAX signed away the rights to the material being
distributed by Atlantic as it was at the time. After Stax went
bankrupt in 1975, Fantasy Records came along and purchased the post
Atlantic masters which were distributed by several labels including CBS
(now Sony BMG) and Gulf/Western(Now Universal Music Group)
Going off topic a bit, has anyone ever visited the Stax Museum in
Memphis?

Yes, Bruce and I visited Soulsville USA in 2004. Along with Sun Studios,
the Civil Rights Musem, and the Smithsonian Museum of Rock & Soul. And
Graceland. And some other places. A terrific place for lover of
1950s/60s/70s music to visit.
My only complaint about the Stax Museum is that the T-shirt I bought there
came down to my knees!

Let's see, now. We're talking about the Stax Records Museum a/k/a
Soulsville U.S.A. Stax Records did not exist during the 1950s. The museum
covers the 60s and early 70s. If you are interested in the soul music of
that era, you will enjoy visiting the museum. If you are interested in the
history of American popular music dating back to the early 1900s, as we are,
you will enjoy visiting Memphis. If you prefer to go to some stupid
gambling casino instead, go right ahead on.
