I was looking at the list of songs the group had on the charts from
the mid 60s to mid 70s, and it seems like it took a little before they
really had their best songs. Also, their early tunes sound almost
like a different group. Some very early songs didn't chart very
high,"Only When You're Lonely" and "Wake Up Wake Up". They don't even
sound like the same group that gave us "Midnight Confessions" and a
nice string of hits into the early 70s. They were pretty good with
"Live For Today", and "The River Is Wide", but the Forum version was
as good or better. I liked some of their last chart tunes like "The
Runway", and "Glory Bound", also stuff like "I'd Wait A Million
Years", "Heaven Knows", "Baby Hold On" - really just about the whole
list of their songs from about '68-72"

Must look them up, think alternate version of first hit! Thanks for
reminding!

That's because it was a different group than when Sloan and Barri
first got the idea.

Can't you find this info on your own? Is it that difficult to Google
the group and see what is out there?

My ass it was. The Forum version is nowhere near as good, but "Let's
Live For Today" by the Living Daylights was almost as good, although
still not the original version of the song (The Rokes was), and the
original version of "Midnight Confessions" by Evergreen Blues was also
a good version.

Saw them in concert in the early 70s...they were pretty good.

If you could choose between the Grassroots or ABBA going into the
R'n'R Hall Of Fame, wouldn't the former be more deserving?

I have nothing against ABBA, but I would definitely vote for the GRass
Roots ahead of ABBA. Actually one of my favorite ABBA tunes was a
solo hit by one of their members, Agnetha Falthskog - "Can't Shake
Loose", from 1983.

Do you even have a clue as to what constitutes a hallo of fame act?

It's not about your personal taste, schmuck.

The Grass Roots are a big favorite of mine, one of my 100 favorite
artists of all time, and I don't like very much by Abba, but there's
no way the Grass Roots belong in in any hall of fame, while Abba is
the 4th biggest selling artist of all time after the Beatles, Elvis
and Michael Jackson.

I mean, is it that difficult for you to assess the credentials of an
artist without bringing your own pathetic personal taste into things?

You're not suggesting that record sales is or should be the top
priority or determing factor on who should get in the RRHF are you?
Further, in reviewing the entire list of Hall of Fame inductees, and
the many acts that have or have not yet been nominated, I'm not sure I
or a lot of other people "have a clue as to what constitutes a hallo
of fame act," based on their nominating criteria.

BTW, I love this, "The Grass Roots are a big favorite of mine, one of
my 100 favorite artists of all time." It must be just monumental to
be one of your 100 closest friends :)

My favorite of their early songs.

I'm still waiting for the Turtles to get in....they were so versatile,
able to excell at all of the mini-genres within Rock and Pop, and
often on the cutting edge as well.

I'm suggesting that it should be a significant determining factor, and
that Abba belongs there long before dogshit like Patti Smith, Leonard
Cohen and the Stooges, among other horrensous inductees.

Yes, it's on my 1965 list, currently at # 101.

Well, whaddaya say?

(I say they keep getting greener and their roots keep stretching further
down into the ground.)

Hey, I somehow read the original subject header as "Grass Boots".

There have certainly been songs about how the grass is greener....

I generally agree, although it's a bit of a red herring. If, by your
standard, sales are a significant determining factor BOTH Abba and the
Grass Roots qualify. If influence is also a significant determining
factor, IMO the Grass Roots' song selection, arrangements and lead
vocals in the '60's and early '70's probably influenced more future
R&R musicians than the VERY saleable but somewhat uninventive pop pulp
of ABBA in the 70's.
