I like the Viscounts number but it can't stack up for me against one
of the most iconic r&b instrumentals of the 50's

The Ventures will have their hands full here I think. Funny but I
always liked the Cole version of "Topsy" a lot but I don't think I've
cast a single vote for it this contest. I've ALWAYS liked its opponent
record better

A potential draw of the round I suppose and they rate almost that way
with me. "Almost". But not quite. Justis's infectious record has the
definite edge for me and carries my vote. Sorry Walter :-(

As always, I'm not sure how all of these have gotten to this point! It
seems in every contest the quarterfinals have a couple of surprises.

anyway, the first two matchups were the toughest for me.

Why the abstention on the last one? Well, I guess I really miss JB's "Night Train", even though I didn't vote for it (not that I regret voting for Topsy, Part 2). NT would beat the pants off either of these two I haven't yet voted on; well at least on my player.

Maybe I will leave them un-voted on as a kind of protest against an imperfect, haphazard seeding system that puts two A+ records up against each other, while leaving a pathway for lesser records to advance despite.

Why protest these two? Because the other 3 contests at least provided an opportunity to vote for records that are worthy to final, although not being the ** only ** records, nothwithstanding NT, to be worthy of the final four.

All that being said, perhaps I fall on the sword of my own argument in disagreeing with the assessment that Night Train (James Brown version) is an instrumental in a pure enough sense to begin with. Certainly the sung lyrics supplied were an essential part of the appeal of NT. I mean, this is a JAMES BROWN record, and not just a Fabulous Flames exercise, right? You subtract Brown's contribution to the recording, and does the record get this far in the contest?

Kind of nice that the 8 remaining records are from 8 different years.

Rog, were any of these NOT the top ranking instrumental in their
yearly battle?

It was a close call for me, but I'm really fond of "Harlem Nocturne" as a composition, and I think the Viscounts do a great job with it. I love "Honky Tonk," too, and won't be sad if it wins.

If I were voting in 1960, the first two matchups would be reversed, but my
passion for "Harlem Nocturne" has faded over the years while my admiration
for "Topsy" has just growed and growed.

If I were voting in 1962 I would never have heard "Hideaway" or "Juke."

As a blues fan, I started to vote for "Juke" automatically, but something
told me to give them both a listen, and I ended up doing the slop to
"Raunchy"--the "correct," i.e. East Coast version of "Raunchy."

What (or which) PARTICULAR literary reference, for God's sake? This was an instrumental, right? You're not saying, or implying, the literary reference is READILY apparent, are you? What was only apparent to me, was a (complete) adaptation of a grammatical error (only).

I may be old-fashioned, but I think period "weeding" is good for the English-language garden, in order to preserve an English that is understood world-wide, and one in which we may access its letters and literature (and cultural heritage) of the past, lest it drift into a narrowly-understood patois of time and place, cut off from its roots; and less useful for world understanding, and have this happen in multiple places around the globe, eventually resulting in a modern day Tower of Babel.

Get with it, Blumy. Why can't you up on literary phrases, like me?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Tom's_Cabin

Topsy – A ragamuffin young slave girl. When asked if she knows who
made her, she professes ignorance of both God and a mother, saying "I
s'pect I growed. Don't think nobody never made me." She is transformed
by Eva's love. During the early-to-mid 20th century, several doll
manufacturers created Topsy and Topsy-type dolls. The phrase "growed
like Topsy" (later "grew like Topsy"; now somewhat archaic) passed
into the English language, originally with the specific meaning of
unplanned growth, later sometimes just meaning enormous growth.

It's from "Uncle Tom's Cabin," for God's sake, and one of the most
familiar literary references there is.

I wasn't familiar with the expression. But I've definitely noticed that
Diane is very careful about the way she makes reference to such things. If
something caught my eye that seemed off, I'd like to think I would assume
that *I* was missing something.

Most others around here are pretty careful that way too. Seems to be part of
the ethos of the group. (see? I just checked and saw that ethos is not
pluralizable [or pluralizeable?])

and, not to imply I consider myself a member of the group

Another example: I was mildly thrown to see Bruce recently use two
Britishisms. First he used "shite"; then he called me and another poster
"arseholes"

He always wishes he were black. Now he wishes he were British?

I have them together in a single mp3 and often listen to "Topsy" that
way.

Here's mine..

***** Bill Doggett -- Honky Tonk -- King 4950 -- 1956
The Viscounts -- Harlem Nocturne -- Madison 123 -- 1959

By coincidence, my car's Sirius radio 50s station played "Honky Tonk"
yesterday, and solidified my vote for it. It's the best actual r'n'r
instrumental hands down.

The Ventures -- Walk Don't Run -- Blue Horizon 101 -- 1960
***** Cozy Cole -- Topsy Part 2 -- Love 5004 -- 1958

Just for the record, I would have voted against "Topsy" if it was
matched up against any of the six other possibilities. "Walk Don't
Run" seems to me by far the least worthy of the quarter-finalists

Freddy King -- Hideaway -- Federal 12401 -- 1961
***** Booker T. & The MG's -- Green Onions -- Volt 102 -- 1962

Little Walter -- Juke -- Checker 758 -- 1952
***** Bill Justis -- Raunchy -- Phillips International 3519 -- 1957
