Most of the songs I've added to my collection this week fall under the
"country" heading.
The bulk of downloads were by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The greatest hits
cd I have by him does a poor job of communicating just *how* great a
singer he actually is. I concentrated on his Civil War songs and
Religious Standards which provide a much better showcase for his
talents.
I added a lot of Jimmie Rodgers classics as well. Prior to this week,
I knew very little about Rodgers: basically that he had two *huge*
hits in the early r'n'r era (that's right, I'm talking about the 50s
Jimmie Rodgers and not the 30s hillbilly brakeman). His version of
Girl in the Wood is almost as amazing as Frankie Laine's (which is
high praise indeed, when you know how big a Frankie Laine fan I am).
I wouldn't guess it from the r'n'r hits, but his voice was really
beautiful. I was shocked to learn about what happened to it. A
Google Group search shows that the bulk of posts about him here were
back in the 90s (it seems this group actually used to be interesting).
Other country singers I've added a song or three by this week are
Mandy Barnett, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, and Rex Allen.
