I'm sure you deducted points for the strings and chorus. It's,
nonetheless, a remarkable piece of singing from the greatest singer of
his generation.

Anyway, don't be such an egotist. I'm sure there were a number of

Ray Charles probably goes even deeper than that.

There's no way that Ray Charles is a better "singer" than Elvis, Clyde
McPhatter, Jackie Wilson, Roy Orbison, and a few other people from his
time.

"16 Candles" is an all time NYC favorite that was #3 on the furst CBS-
FM listener voted top 500, just behind "In The Still of the Nite" and
"Earth Angel."

All great, especially Clyde, who is the greatest lead singer of the
decade by a mile. But RC could do things Clyde couldn't, and many
things Roy Orbison couldn't. Anyway, I'm not talking technical
proficiency or octave range. If I were, Orbison would win and the
others would probably beat RC. I'm talking the whole package of
singing.

So what? How'd it do in the next ten polls? Anyway, polls don't
influence my tastes. "Sixteen Candles" is a pleasant enough record, but
you and I can both think of hundreds of vocal group records that are
better.

So am I. Ray is great, but not the greatest of his era. All of the
names I mentioned could do things that he could not do.

It continued to do great until the station moved away from 50s music.

I can't think of many vocal group records that got to #2 on the
national charts that are better.

Bruce, this list showed up last (a reply to Dean's removal) but it still
had Georgia on My Mind on it, so there may be other errors.

The only person I was "getting" was Ray Charles. And yes, my dislike
for him goes much, *much* deeper:

This is from a post I made back in 2004:

"Try playing Laine's 1949 recording of GEORGIA ON MY MIND followed by
Charles' 1960 cover and see where the latter got his inspiration from.

"Ray Charles was doing his best to imitate Frankie Laine's style (on
these songs), but his vocal ability was severely limited -- as even
his most ardent fans readily admit. In the spots where Laine would
blast out one of his signature, emotionally charged high notes,
Charles merely hyperventillated like a bad imitation of Jerry Lewis
doing his spastic schtick. IMHO."

Frankie Laine's version to me sounds like a guy making fun of a singer
who is trying much too hard to create some false emotion with bad
theatrics. Ray sounds like someone, who actually is from Georgia, who
really feels what he is singing about. LoVecchio doesn't know shit
about Georgia and it shows in his reading of the song.

And that's why Ray's version was a number one pop chart hit and is
considered to be one of the all time classic records in the history of
recorded music, the official state song of Georgia, and Laine's
version was a non hit that is nothing more than a weak footnote in his
career.

Here's my second favorite version, just behind Ray's version:

oldies radio around here. Let's get it out of here already, I can't
believe that it has lasted this long - "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" The

think that singing as high as you can possibly sing is a good thing.

"Success has made a failure out of me" goes a song completely
irrelevant to this contest. That might be the case with Percy Faith's
"Theme from a Summer Place". That song was played once every half
hour, every day, for weeks, for months. If I never hear it again I'll
be glad. I don't even know if it's good or bad, I just know that I
heard it way too many times and it must leave right now.

I'm quitting as fast as I joined this enterprise. If a song as great as Georgia On My Mind by RCR can be eliminated (especially this early in the proceedings) on the say-so of just one person, then there is something structural wrong with the paradigm of the way this contest is set up, and a complete waste of time for me. Scarlotti's action clarifies this entire exercise as probably not much more than mental masturbation, or perhaps, even less....

I'm posting through Google and I *still* can't keep the list
straight. Doug said he was taking out "the last Connie," but the list
in his post still included "Don't Break The Heart That Loves You."

So: If "Don't Break The Heart That Loves You" is still alive, I'm
removing it.

If not, I'm removing the utterly pathetic "Michael" by The
Highwaymen.

And if someone already took *that* one out, then I'll remove "Soldier
Boy" by The Shirelles, a much-beloved oldie that I never liked.

And if *that* one's already gone.....then the fuck with it, I quit.

What EFFING hypocrites you whiners are! It seems to be OKAY for you
guys to knock out pop hits that were NUMBER ONE in major markets
for week after week after week, e.g. Johnny Angel, but if so much
as ONE of us knock out ONE of YOUR precious faves, then WWIII
erupts? GROW the EFFING up, GROW some balls, GROW some thicker skin
and stop behaving like some snot-nosed little spoiled punk!
