EXTINCTION: Number One Songs of the 1950s

[The Bloomfield Buddy]

EXTINCTION: Number One Songs of the 1950s - Included on the list is
every song that got to number one on any of Billboard's Pop Charts
during the 50s. This includes the Top 100, the Hot 100, the Sales
Chart, the Jukebox chart or the DJ chart. There's 152 songs in all.

Same rules as the Drifters contest. Each poster can knock out one song
every day. The day starts and ends at midnight eastern time. Hopefully
we have more participants this time as everybody should know all or
most all of these songs. Frank should definitely be able to play, as
well as anyone else in the group.

Amazingly, and by coincidence (I guess), my first choice was gonna be "Why"...Frankie at his nasal wimpiest, but Mark beat me to it.
Never a huge instrumental fan, although I'm with those who like "Sleep Walk", please give Percy Faith's "Delicado" it's walking papers. I'm sure I haven't heard it in 50+ years and am a better person for it. ;-)

I've *heard* opera on various radio & tv (PBS) shows over the years.
I even listened to several Caruso records. I used to listen to
classical (it's fun to drive to because everything you see invariably
synchs up to the music), but usually switched stations when an opera
singer came on. Mostly, I don't care for the genre or the voices.
The only opera singers I've ever responded positively to are Lanza,
and Pavarotti. In my thoroughly amateurish critical opinion, their
vocals managed to transcend the genre/style. Perhaps there's
something akin to pop music in their delivery (in the way they express
emotions) that reaches me.

I was only five years old when "The Thing" was out but I remember it
being all over the (BBC) radio over here. That was in the days before
there was any British record charts of course---but if they'd existed
at that time I'd bet big money that Phil Harris and his funny looking
friend would have been at or very near the top of them

Good idea. It was difficult to follow.

Perhaps if you duplicate your 'fixed' post, and re-name it with something
like, "use this thread to eliminate",hopefully everyone would use that main
thread to eliminate, thus seeing what's still availablle, making it much
easier to follow. And comments and such could be on any thread as needed.

I want to keep it all in one thread, I'll stay on top of it,

Posters should go to the latest list, copy it, and then paste it into
their post first. Then they can make their choice, and delete it from
the list/ There's no neeed to keep any of the prior poster's text in
your new post.

Or just reply to the latest list. In Microsoft Mail, the draft reply
includes the latest list. Just remove the one you are eliminating and other
extraneous info and post the message.

"The Thing" was incredibly popular at year end of 1950 and into 1951
spawning a whole ton of rival versions of the number from the likes of
Teresa Brewer,The Ames Brothers,Danny Kaye,Arthur Godfrey etc etc.
There was a pretty bad hick country version from the future Mrs Johnny
Cash,June Carter

There were even a couple of R&B versions--a rather disappointing one
from Steve Gibson & The Original Red Caps. OTOH I never heard the Doc
Vitamin version on Apollo. Anyone got this?

I also never heard the version by Tommy Tucker. This wasn't the black
"Hi Heel Sneakers" guy of course but a white pop bandleader of the
time that recorded for MGM
