NOTE: In assembling these lists, I try to leave off any songs without at least a tentative connection to R&B - no matter how well did on the R&B charts. However, in the case of 1959, I had a hell of a time deciding which songs to include and which ones to leave off. If (in your view) I made any errors, I hope they're on side of inclusion.

resemblence to R & B is that the performer was black:
MISTY by Mathis? Great, great song. R & B?
IN THE MOOD by Ernie Fields? Great arrangement. R & B?
DANNY BOY by Conway is more R & B than either of those.

Based on some of what I read here, I revised the list. I think it's a bit more reflective now of what the record industry passed off as R&B in 1959.

creating a dreamy ambience. This version peaked at #11 on the

Bruce sent me scans of Big Al Pavlow's year-end R&B lists for 1950-59. As such, my lists for that decade will now reflect his rankings - which also factor in R&B songs that made the pop charts.

100 songs.
