I knew the hipness quotient of our aggregate group here is over-rated, but even I am surprised to realize (well, seeing is believing) how low IT REALLY IS, when push comes to shove.  Nellie Lutcher's record deserved a lot better, but then again, you'd be fightin' against a tide of pseudo-cool sometimes in these parts, that holds forth.  Normally, I don't make too much of a peep anymore on small matters like these, but this is an exception, when the choice between pleasantly, but mildly engaging and skyscraper grandeur of all-universe/all-time cool is put up for a match.

13      The Crystals -- Da Doo Ron Ron -- Philles 112 -- 1963

4       Nellie Lutcher -- Fine Brown Frame -- Capitol 15032 -- 1948>>

I love "Fine Brown Frame" - enough to have included it on my list of '40s favorites - but "Da Doo Ron Ron" was just too classic to vote against. Sorry about that....

Subject: Re: RESULTS!! FABULOUS FEMMES BATTLE : Round Two

I'm pretty much with Dean on this one. My vote for the Crystals wasn't a knee-jerk; if anything, my knee is more inclined to jerk Lutcher's way. But, I auditioned the records back-to-back, and determined that, if I really had to choose one, I'd rather listen to "Da Doo Ron Ron." Perhaps it's because of my relationship with the early 1960s in general, or with Jeff and Ellie in particular, but it brought me more joy.

One of the challenges in voting in these contests is in match-ups like this one. Lutcher and the Crystals are like champagne and soda pop. And, while I may be a champagne guy, to my taste this was good champagne going up against the very best soda pop.

As far as I'm concerned, greater records than "Fine Brown Frame" have fallen to lesser ones than "Da Doo Ron Ron": e.g., Dinah Washington's "I Don't Hurt Anymore" getting clobbered by the Bobbettes' "Mr. Lee." (Indeed, Ms. Washington has been ill-served in a number of match-ups.) And in what world but this one does *any* record by Billie Holiday--much less "T'ain't Nobody's Business If I Do"--come in second to the Kodoks?

But, it's obvious that most of the participants disagree with me, and that's fine. The contest is about judging the records, not the voters and their "hipness." I had my vote, same as everyone else; and, when the contest is over, we can all still listen to whatever we like.
