December 28 1947!!!

Exactly SIXTY TWO years ago today one of the very GREATEST records
ever made was laid down in the city of Cincinnati.

As Oran "Hot Lips" Page,Hal Singer,Joe Knight,Carl "Flat Top Wilson"
and Clarence Donaldson all came together.........

.....to back an exhuberant Wynonie Harris on the awesome "Good Rockin'
Tonight"

I didn't know "Hot Lips" Page was the record, but I'm not surprised. I
have a bunch of his great sides and I've always thought of him as one
of the "missing links" between jazz, and r&b. I just looked him upon
Wikipedia and was happy to learn that I was more than right. He started
back in the 20s backing, among others, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Ida
Cox. Then he was a member of a group called the Blue Devils that
featured a young Count Basie on piano. He also played with Artie Shaw.
His career seems to curl like a vine around the whole history of blues,
jazz, swing, r&b, and r'n'r.

Yes, I agree. I've listened to quite a bit of his 1940s stuff in the past
year. He's mostly forgotten today, but he recorded a lot of good music, and
from the stuff I've heard it seems like he must have been a very amusing and
engaging stage performer too, in the style of Louis Jordan.

Sadly Page got very short shift on this side of the puddle as he only
ever had one---yes just ONE---release here in the whole of the 1950's
decade.

But luckily it's one of his best. Recorded for and released by King in
1954 it arrived on these shores in 1955 via King's licencing agreement
with EMI and appeared here on the Parlophone label (yes the same
Parlophone that 7 years later would start issuing the Beatles records)
