The UK music weekly "Melody Maker" publishes for the first time this
day. Throughout the 50's the r&r-hating magazine is heavily jazz
orientated and does its level best to airbrush the ascendancy of rock
'n' roll music completely from its narrow Mingus/Monk/Brubeckian
vision of the current music scene,man

JANUARY 2 1941

One of the best pop numbers of the 40's is recorded this day when The
Andrews Sisters wax the rollicking "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" for Decca
Records. Recorded in Los Angeles,the gals go on to perform the song in
the smash hit Abbott & Costello movie "Buck Privates"

JANUARY 2 1949

The Ravens sing "My Sugar Is So Refined" on Ed Sullivan's "Toast Of
The Town" show. Rudy Vallee also appears

JANUARY 2 1954

Eddie Fisher hits the #1 spot this day with his vocal version of "Oh
My Papa" ending the run of Tony Bennett and "Rags To Riches" at the
top

JANUARY 2 1955

Five thousand people attend Johnny Ace's funeral in Memphis at the
Clayborn Temple Church. The R&B star accidentally killed himself in a
game of Russian roulette. His pallbearers include Little Junior
Parker, and Rosco Gordon

In Orlaqndo Florida,Ral Donner records "I Didn't Figure On Him (To
