And so the 1950 Singles Battle comes to its Grand Finale..........

Here are the voting results for the 1950 GRAND FINAL round in which 23
people voted (10 less than the last Grand Final Round which was in the
1959 Singles Battle---but I guess we all knew that a contest featuring
the music of such a long ago year as 1950 was NEVER going to attract
the same kind of involvement that the overall much more well known
music of later years would carry)

Anyway here's how it panned out :-

>Championship Bout
>10 Hank Snow - I'm Movin' On - RCA 48-0328
>12 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Nat Cole makes history here today in taking his huge "Mona Lisa" hit
not just the furthest that any pop record was ever taken in any of
these contests---but taking it all the way to the Grand Final round
-----AND WINNING THE DAMN THING TOO!!!

Here's how Nat got here---and here are the records he defeated
somewhere along the way......

Round 1

>20 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010
> 2 Wini Brown - He's My Daddy - National 9102

Round 2

>18 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010
> 3 The Delta Rhythm Boys - If You See Tears In My Eyes - Atlantic 900

Round 3

>3 Smiley Lewis - Lowdown - Imperial
>17 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Round 4

> 6 Louis Jordan - Blue Light Boogie - Decca 27114
>15 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Round 5

> 4 Gunter Lee Carr - We're Gonna Rock - Decca 48170
>18 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Round 6

> 7 Archibald - Stack-A-Lee - Imperial 5068
>17 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Quarter Finals

>10 Clarence Garlow - Bon Ton Roula - Macy's 5002
>14 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

Semi Finals

> 6 Hank Williams - Moanin' The Blues - M-G-M 10832
>16 Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa - Capitol 1010

But he didn't have it quite all his own way---there were a couple of
times in this Final Round that Hank Snow (who also deserves credit for
taking his "I'm Movin' On" so very far in the contest) was ahead by a
vote or two.

But in the end the lady with the mystic smile won the day.

Here's the illustrious company of previous contest winners that Nat
now joins :-

1950 - Nat "King" Cole - Mona Lisa
1951 - The Dominoes - Sixty Minute Man
1952 - Hank Williams - Jambalaya
1953 - contest due in 2010
1954 - Joe Turner - Shake,Rattle And Roll
1955 - Chuck Berry - Maybellene
1956 - Little Richard - Long Tall Sally
1957 - Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On
1958 - contest due in 2010
1959 - Ray Charles - What'd I Say
1960 - The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me
1961 - contest due in 2010
1962 - Sam Cooke - Bring It On Home To Me
1963 - Martha & The Vandellas - Heat Wave

And so lady and gentlemen....(cue music)..........

I give you the ultimate 1950 SINGLES BATTLE CHAMPION....

NAT "KING" COLE!

And---yep,the lady had it right---the sublime "MONA LISA"

Second Place Runner Up - Hank Snow and "I'm Movin' On"

Now comes the Consolation Bout (for third place honors) :-

>Consolation Bout (determines third place)
>14 Hank Williams - Long Gone Lonesome Blues - M-G-M 10645
> 8 Hank Williams - Moanin' The Blues - M-G-M 10832

Whatever happened in this bout neither Hank Williams nor MGM Records
could lose---and by a wider margin of victory this time out it's
Hank's "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" classic which is voted into third
place ahead of his equally classic "Moanin' The Blues".

Hank nd both of his records here had very long and very successful
runs in the contest and both are highly worthy of the runner up places
they attain here today

Therefore I declare Third Place honors go to Hank Williams and "Long
Gone Lonesome Blues"

And so after several weeks the 1950 tournament comes to its close---as
ever its been great fun and I sincerely hope everyone else enjoyed it
as much as I did. It was certainly the hardest so far in terms of the
work and research involved in getting it together.

Thanks go as ever to Marc and Rick of course who keep the
technological side of things on course and make these contests so much
easier to operate these days.

Thanks are also due to those who contributed with ideas and especially
to those who helped me get the initial list of contestant records
together.

But most of all thanks go to all those who took part---and especially
those who contributed to the several highly interesting, informative
and entertaining exchanges of opinions about the music involved that
the contest helped generate.

And in answer to the inevitable $64.0000 question YES there will be
another Singles Battle coming fairly soon. The list is nearing
completion as we speak and it won't be too far into 2010 before we
come a little more up to date with the contest and before we all get a
chance to wallow in deja vu---and cast our votes for these songs all
over again!! :)

"What'd I Say"....."Louie,Louie"....."I Hear You Knocking"....."Life
Is But A Dream"....."Music,Music,Music"....."One Mint Julep"....."Riot
In Cell Block # 9"....."Twist And Shout"....."Every Beat Of My Heart"
......"Sunday Kind Of Love"....."One Summer Night".... "Money".....
"Peanuts"......"Jambalaya ".......etc....etc

Oh,and in keeping with the season..."Jingle Bell Rock" :)

And a WHOLE load more!!

Stick around! :)

I would imagine that Mark D will figure this out too, but it looks as
though 1961 must be our next Year in the Series of Singles Battles.

Thanks to those Group members who post their votes in these contests.
I look forward to seeing how a few of the faithful posters vote and I
also enjoy reading their comments.

Thanks as always to Rick S, Marc D, and Roger F for all they do to
make these Singles Battles possible. Happy holidays to everyone in
our Group.

Since I consider Nat "King" Cole to be the greatest Pop Singer we have
ever had, it seems most appropriate to congratulate him for winning
the 1950 Singles Battle. And Hank Snow finishes Second with possibly
the biggest Country Hit ever according to Billboard.

And Hank Williams finishes Third with what was my Favorite Song by him
in this Contest. So all of the Top 3 Songs from 1950 are quite good
musically in my view.

Good result.

I already have offered my thanks, but no harm doing it again. Thanks.
