EVENTS OF THE DAY

DECEMBER 30 1942

Frank Sinatra opens at New Yorks Paramount Theatre for what is
scheduled to be a 4-week engagement. His shows turn out to be so
popular, he is booked for an additional 4 weeks. An estimated 400
policemen are called out to help curb the excitement. It is said that
some of the teenage girls involved were hired to scream, but many more
screamed for free. Sinatra is dubbed 'The Sultan of Swoon', 'The Voice
that Thrills Millions', and just 'The Voice'. But whatever he was, it
is at this Paramount Theatre engagement that modern pop hysteria is
born.

DECEMBER 30 1948

"Kiss Me Kate" opens at the New Century Theatre in New York City
starring Alfred Drake with music and songs by Cole Porter and and
adapted from Shakespeares comedy,"The Taming of the Shrew"

DECEMBER 30 1953

As well as rock & roll being instrumental in forming a perception of
teenagers = hoodlums in the gullible public mind, the movies do their
fair share to foster the growing image and never more so than with
"The Wild One" starring Marlon Brando that opens in New York City this
day

Elsewhere the first colour television sets go on sale this day (for
more than $1,000 according to the source I have!!) .

For Life" for King

Ricki Pal guests on "American Bandstand"

DECEMBER 30 1961

One of the best known movie themes of all time reaches #1 on the UK
chart this day when "Moon River" (from "Breakfast At Tiffanys") takes
the top spot in a cover version by local black artist Danny Williams
(the same guy that will go on to have a major US hit a few years later
with "White On White"). "Moon River" takes over from the previous
#1---yet another cover version this time Frankie Vaughan's rendering
of "Tower Of Strength"
