DECEMBER 28 1944

The musical "On The Town" opens this night in New York City.It will
become the first big Broadway success for a young man named Leonard
Bernstein and will spawn the hit song "New York,New York"---and will
later become a smash hit MGM movie

DECEMBER 28 1947

One of the very GREATEST records ever made is laid down this day.

DECEMBER 28 1955

The Platters hit #1 on the R&B chart when "The Great Pretender" knocks
Jay McShann's "Hands Off" from the top spot this day

DECEMBER 28 1956

In Nashville this day The Gladiolas (including Maurice Williams of
"Stay" fame) record the original version of "Little Darlin'".Coupled
with "Sweetheart Please Don't Go" also from this session it is rush
released by Excello in January 1957

Meanwhile down in Memphis Glenn Honeycutt has his third session for
Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Unlike his previous sessions this one
will actually produce recordings that will see light of day---notably
his only Sun single release (in January 1957) "I'll Be Around"/"I'll
Wait Forever" . Various takes of "Rock All Night" sit in the vaults
for decades before eventual release. "Lonely Days" is still sitting
there. Personnel : Glenn Honeycutt (vocals / guitar) ; Roland Janes
(guitar) ;Jimmy Van Eaton (drums) ; Jimmy Wilson (piano); Miller
Sisters (vocal group).

Buddy Holly & The Crickets appear on the "Arthur Murray Dance Party"
show this day

DECEMBER 28 1958

Jane Morgan sings "The Day The Rains Came" and "Fascination" on "The
Ed Sullivan Show"

DECEMBER 28 1959

Frankie Avalon's "Why" becomes the new #1 this day taking over from
Guy Mitchell and "Heartaches By The Number"

Chubby Checker makes an early appearance on "American Bandstand"

DECEMBER 28 1960

James Brown & The Famous Flames headline at the Apollo Theatre in New
York City

Another Fats Domino session at Cosmo's Factory in New Orleans sees all
four tracks are released as Imperial singles-"What A Price"/"Ain't
That Just Like A Woman" plus "Fell In Love On Monday" and ""It Keeps
Rainin'"

Meanwhile in Memphis Elvis Presley's former girlfriend Anita Wood cuts
a session for Sam Phillips at Sun Records that produces the single
"I'll Wait Forever"/"I Can't Show How I Feel" .

Note : her "I'' Wait Forever" is not the same song as the Glenn
Honeycutt number (see 1956 above)

DECEMBER 28 1962

Mary Wells sings "Two Lovers" on "American Bandstand"

At Abbey Road Studios in London,Cliff Richard records "It's All In the
Game" (chosen as a forthcoming Columbia single),the unissued "From
This Day On" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" (released on the Columbia
EP "Love Songs")

DECEMBER 28 1963

Bobby Vee marries 20 year old Karen Bergen at the Holy Rosary Church
in Orchard Lake, Michigan
