The Historical Museum of Southern Florida presents, Calypso Music in
Postwar America, an exhibition detailing the rich history of
Trinidadian calypso music and its impact on the popular culture of the
United States between 1945 and 1960. Funded in part by the National
Endowment for the Humanities, this exciting and rare exhibition
includes a mix of photographs, sheet music, songbooks, record album
covers, movie posters, and many other original items. View rare
photographs and promotional graphics that trace calypso in the American
record industry, song publishing, nightclub acts, concerts, Broadway
shows and Hollywood movies. Much of the material is from the private
collection of Ray Funk, a popular music researcher based in Fairbanks,
Alaska. Additional items are from a variety of archives in the United
States, the United Kingdom and Trinidad. A related exhibition can be
viewed online at www.calypsoworld.org.
Along with Visions of the Caribbean also until June 5, 2005
Explore a rich array of rare illustrations, maps, and prints of the
Caribbean, ranging from the sixteenth century to the present.
