I received a "heartfelt" e-mail this evening asking me to visit a website
for South African artists. An excerpt from the e-mail: "We are passing
this on to you to invite your support for South African Artists. As you may
know, there is a wealth of talent in South Africa and the art
community there is still working through the traumas of the apartheid era
and the difficult transformation that has affected everyone in the country
since 1994."

Here's the site: http://www.southafricanartists.com/ . It will take a
couple of minutes, but click on some of the thumbnails and tell me -- do you
notice something about the artists?

Yep. Which got me to thinking...I wonder just how much of the "traumas of
apartheid" they experienced.

How do you know they where not members of the ANC's communist wing? then they
would have felt it.

They probably where not though, more like hoity toity middle class types. But
still, its good not to automatically categorise on the skin type, people nowdays
seem to always forget Joe Slovo (ex-leader of sa communist party, ex-sa housing
minister).

Anyone intrested in reading a round up of this guy (joe slovo), or who has a
intrest in political history;
http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/37a/001.html
http://www.anc.org.za/people/slovo.html

Something I didnt know till today is that he was involved with the Springbok
Legion, which was formned by South African soldiers and ex-service men during
WWII with the aim of ensuring the anti-fascist struggle was carried over into
civilian life in post-war South Africa.

Good for you! And if you get a response, let me know. I sent them an
e-mail, too, and I want to see if we get a "real" response or just a form
letter.

It wasn't so much their skin colour, per se....it was that in combination
with the e-mail that came with the link. Using Apartheid as a marketing
tool....how incredibly crass. So the colour of the artists was really the
last straw.

Hi Andre

Thanks for your feedback to our mailing.

We make a point of encouraging black artists
and there are a number of them on the site.

If we did not have a multi-cultural site,
then what would be the point?

Cheers

Funny. In the e-mail he sent to me, he said he had to "twist the arms" of
black artists to get them to join.
