he must be. -- Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) American Psychologist

Mariza - " . . .diva material, full of clenched emotion and elaborate
arabesques, set against the pristine, mandolin-like sound of the
12-stringed Portuguese guitar. It is proudly theatrical music, and
Mariza's appearance was striking . . . her voice swelling to reach
climaxes short of tears." --New York Times
Fado, the blues of Portugal, has a new queen - Mariza. She is hailed
for a voice that recalls legendary singer Amalia Rodrigues, and a
modern style all her own. Mariza makes traditional fado for modern
ears, while staying close to the roots of the beloved style.
She is on tour in support of her new CD, Transparente, produced in
Brazil by Grammy-winning Brazilian cellist and arranger Jacques
Morelenbaum. In a few short years, Mariza has established herself as
the new face of fado, seducing audiences worldwide with her powerful
singing & charismatic stage presence.
The poetic drama at the heart of fado, built around the Portuguese
sense of "saudade" (something of a cross between yearning and
nostalgia) and the beauty of the Portuguese guitar, is at the heart of
Mariza's music. She was born in Mozambique but was raised in the
historic heart of Lisbon. Mariza began singing as a teen in the small
bars and clubs of the neighborhood, where fado is a living tradition.
Her striking beauty, fluid grace, her instinctive use of the
traditional black-fringed shawl, combined with her gorgeous voice
quickly brought Mariza to international stardom.

Youssou N'dour
"Egypt" featuring the Egyptian Orchestra
Presented by the Rhythm Foundation and Miami Performing Arts Center
One of the world's greatest singers and most enduring world music
artists, Senegalese star Youssou N'dour brings his "Egypt" tour
to a Florida debut concert at the beautiful Gusman Theater. Youssou
won a 2005 Grammy Award for the recording of this spectacular project,
which features a 20-piece Egyptian and Senegalese orchestra backing up
his distinctive voice.
Youssou is considered the most popular African artist of the past two
decades. He was the only African artist featured at July's Live 8
concerts. In fact, he performed at both the London and Paris stages on
July 2, then in Edinburgh on July 6. Last year he was featured at the
prestigious Carnegie Hall "Creator" series, which included
concerts, commissioning projects & radio broadcasts.
With his beloved band Super Etoile (Super Star) & beautiful soaring
voice, Youssou helped develop the mblalax rhythm in the 1970s - a
groovy fusion of West African rhythms with funk, soul, jazz & rock.
His music has been a fixture in dance clubs & on radios across Africa
and Europe. He was introduced to American audiences in part through
frequent collaborations with stars like Peter Gabriel (with whom he
sang the duet "In Your Eyes"), Wyclef Jean, Sting and many others.
His headline performances at the landmark WOMAD Festivals & Amnesty
International concerts introduced US audiences to his unique sound.
The "Egypt" project allows Youssou to explore musically the Muslim
traditions of his native Senegal. He created the CD, which was awarded
the Grammy for Best World Music album in March 2005, to show the beauty
of his Islamic Sufi culture. The album & the tour features 20
musicians playing Egyptian & Arabian orchestral sounds. The lyrics
illustrate the distinctly Senegalese way of Islam, & of Sufi thought &
practice.
N'dour says "Egypt" is an exploration of what Muslims have in
common, & how Islam is practiced in Senegal, Egypt & across the Middle
East. Egypt, he says, is an album that "praises the tolerance of my
religion" in an era where Islam has been largely misunderstood by
non-Muslims.
Youssou N'dour in concert is presented by the Rhythm Foundation and
Miami Performing Arts Center. This important and prestigious event
further develops the relationship between Rhythm Foundation, the
leading presenter of world music in South Florida, and MPAC. The
organizations first collaborated in June on the FĂȘte de la Musique
festival, which featured nuevo-flamenco stars Ojos de Brujo

Jorge Drexler - Solo concert Yes, Uruguayan singer/songwriter was
elated to be nominated for a 2005 Academy Award for his lovely song "Al
Otro Lado del Rio" from the film The Motorcycle Diaries. And yes, he
was perhaps a bit indignant to not be asked to perform his song during
the awards ceremony. Instead, the much better known Antonio Banderas
sang his song.
And perhaps this practically unknown-in-the-US artist made a name for
himself that moment, when he won the Oscar, & used his time at the
podium to perform part of his song.
This award, the first time a Spanish-language song has won an Oscar,
has been greeted in his native Uruguay with the type of euphoria
usually saved for soccer championships.
Jorge Drexler, who has lived in Madrid for 10 years, has been popular
in parts of Latin American for several years. The son of German Jewish
immigrants, he began his career as a physician. But he gave up his
medical career to follow his inner music, and has now recorded seven
well-received albums - well-crafted and intelligent lyrics, music that
blends traditional Latin rhythms with modern nuances. His compositions
have been covered by many major Latin artists. And now that the US
audience has had a (brief) taste of his music, it is time for a debut
tour! He visits Miami as part of this series.
