Take a look at the album covers for the martial arts riddim album and the
knockout riddim album. Both feature black characters beating up on white
characters. I found this to be a little racist. If the situation was
reversed I think everyone would have a huge problem with it.
What do you think?

No, I think he makes a fair point. Although this thing happens a lot there
are some examples of similar cover art done in a better way. For example
Scientist wins the world cup has white and black guys on the losing team.

OK, but I still don't see it.

I'm looking at MA part2 as I type. I'm looking at highly stylised art work
with the dreadlock karate character enhanced so he stand out over the other
characters. The dreadlock image is the only one enhanced, wearing a Black
belt and the rest are line drawn.(Note also the comment on the front: '20
MORE BLACK BELTERS - LIMITED EDITION) To me they are neutral images. I can't
extrapolate from these line drawings that they are there to represent a
particular race or gender.

How can you say they are not representation of Orential women?

In fact, everything else about the art work is neutral; their facial
outlines, the knife, the fighting stick, their belts are neutral(no colour)
and by implication so are their skills at the martial arts.

Racist? I don't think so.

You make some good points. I suppose the "Beaten up" characters could be
seen as non descript and lacking any race or gender. Maybe I was jumping
the gun a little. take a look at the cover for knockout riddim

But why would you think this is racist? Perhaps you're overthinking this a
little? I hardly think that was anyone's intent. And keep in mind, all of
the singers on the CD are black.....

I agree that the artwork mentioned hardly lends itself to charges of racism.

On the other hand, I find the T&A displayed on some of the Ragga Ragga
albums, and most of Jamdown's Riddim Ryder albums to be very SEXIST and
DEGRADING towards women. I've always thought that if you have to do that in
order to sell albums, it doesn't say much for the music contained
therein.....

i agree Carol...but Ii sure see a lot of blatant sexis...domineerance,
submission, etc. on those other covers. that's a big part of why i
stay pretty much with roots or lover's rock...the covers are enough to
scare me away.....

much respect,

Crystal

Not to mention that most of them are just really poorly done. I have a few
CDs (major label ones, I might add) that you can tell the text and graphics
came straight out of Microsoft Word. Ugh.

except that in the world of reggae, the inverse relationship of cover art vs
contents often takes precedence. besides, ...well i wont go into
"besides"...

i dig greensleeves dancehall comps artwork, because they are often cheesy, they
are funny in their own rights. you recognise them right away in a disc rack, to
put it short they are visually striking, and avoid the usual clichés of reggae
music.sometimes you don't really get the connection between the artwork and the
title, guessing it when it's not obvious is good fun. as for the choice of
colours (nothing to do with The Heptones, mind you), some are really obnoxious
but that's funny. the way some people see JA music is much too stern and
strict, imo : music is music !
bad taste, YES, so what !
if some people think they are un-pc, well, that's their views.
as for martial arts ' cover being racist, wow, i was glad to learn !!!! ; )

even if it was 'racist', who cares?

yall have been doing this same stuff to black people
for the longest. so quite your whining.

i have news for all of yall, yall are not
down by no means. just stick to listening to your
reggae and leave the 'down with the man' slogans
to someone else.

Making generalizations based upon race (by europeans) is what contributed to
you peoples enslavement in the beginning. Why would you want to go and
continue that foolish way of thinking yourself. You are just continuing a
cycle of hatred.

Who Cares?
Wouldn't an album review have been more constructive?
This is the kind of pedantic over-sensitivity that holds back racial unity
within modern society.
--and for one I would far rather know whether it is worth me buying the
album for it's musical content!

Respect ---Ralph.

cuz it's JUST a CD cover, am sure there was no ill intent when making the
cover, probably just "looked cool" to the artist who did it. If i had to think
of every concept/intention behind a CD cover, I wouldn't own any music
