I always thought that the two important thinks about a rap artist are
style and lyrics. Now suppose a rap artist would sound like he was
reading the telephone book and he would say he was not responsible for
his lyrics, because he was just a product of the society - would you
take him seriously or even give him a Grammy?

I know what you are getting at... Although not a fan I have listend to
Eminem quite a lot (regarding "popular music", Hip Hop happens to be my main
interset, next to dancehall reggae) and I tell you this: Listen before you
speak!
His lyrics are in fact much more complex and multi-layered than his critics
give him credit foer...
Yes, he is a product of society (aren´t we all), but if for instance a
filmmaker or a novelist depicts events in a similiar way, nobody would
protest in the same kind of manner and hold personally responsible for what
their characters do or say). And he IS a storyteller, and a artist
expressing himself.
It is al albout double-standards and many of those people who are bashing
out on him are the same people that bashed out at the movie "Kids" or
"Gummo" (the last refered to by, for instance, Bernado Bertlucci and Werner
Herzog as an American masterpiece in modern cinema), but find Scream to be
just great.

Let us keep in mind, though, that Eminem blows!

No kidding.

Respect
