I'm listening to the duo of Brian & Tony Gold right now, and their
1991 CD Green Light on Pow Wow. They also had a disc out on VP (last
year?) that was great. I would consider them an underrated act.

Who else do you considered underrated?

One of my all time favorites which seems to be relatively
un-known is a wonderful album called "On The Rock"
by the Cimmarons, which as I understand it were UK-based.

I'll second most of the nominees I've seen so far and add Chalice, Ranking
Trevor, Lone Ranger, Peter Hunnigale and especially Johnny Osbourne.

Check out Ronnie Davis and Idren's "Come Straight" cd on Nighthawk (1996).
Ronnie Davis carries the Itals formula to his new group. The cd has some
really good songs!

I've read this post with great interest. My selections are

Earl Lowe (Little Roy)
Rod Taylor
Barry Brown
Lacksley Castell
Earl Cunningham
Earl Zero
Wayne Wade
and atleast 20 different toasters that I can think of. But defintely the most
underrated roots singer has to be Little Roy. Sanjay

Robert, I never heard them but I recall less than complimentary posts
about them a while back. They are completely unknown and unheard of
here in the UK.

As you can appreciate, my answer was basically saying that Reggae
music as a whole is underrated....

I know I shouldn't bring up the band Christafari because discussions
surrounding concerning them have been exhausted on RMR. However, as a fan of
many types of reggae I would say that Christafari is underrated.
Unfortubnetely, they seem to have bad label attached to them now. But. . I
disregard everyhting else, and simply enjoy most of their songs on their three
releases. If you compared their music to some of the music (not vocals, looks,
or religions) out of JA, I don't think they would be so ridiculed. They're not
great, but certainly they can hold their own with many USA reggae bands.

Cool Vibes,
Akee123

Ackee,

I am in full agreement--Christafari is very underrated.
I don't agree with many things Mark Mohr says or does, but I think
he is a very talented songwriter/performer, and there are quite
a few first-rate songs on their albums which will stand the
test of time. This has nothing to do with "race," religion,
or ideology, IMHO.

By the way, the spin-off from Christafari, Temple Yard,
has a very nice single out, a remake of "Lion of Judah"
which updates this classic.

Peace,
M.C. Gregory

I have to put my 2 cents in here. As far as I'm concerned, Thrid World is
the most underrated reggae artist/act. They have never won a major award in
the US, much less in Ja. even though their music has been innovative, even
experimental at times (for reggae). These guys never received the respect
that they deserved. As such, they are one of my all time favorite groups,
from yawd to foreign.

I started this as more of an inside joke than anything. But now that we're on
the subject: most reggae followers don't divorce the message from the music.
And in Christafari's instance they have given interviews of some really
egregious culturally imperialist and patronizing views of Jamaican society
and the usurpation of Rastafari in a non-Rastafarian missionary endeavor. For
that, this band and/or Mark Mohr gets nothing but the hairy eyeball from me.
