> Here's my CD collection!

Am I to understand that the site only contains one song from
various bands, or more? I'd be kind of concerned if whole albums started
going up there, because that's not what I understand the purpose to be.

That's the same thing I asked a while back in an email but didn't get
a response, could you let us know what's up, Reverend? Thanks!!

That's lovely Reverend, but, as the owner of the reproduction rights to ALL
items on the Cuneiform label, a number of which you have posted WITHOUT our
permission [& without even inquiring if we would give permission], I would
kindly request that you take any and all items from our catalog DOWN.

Sincerely & seriously,

Steve,

I understand your issue. But don't you think that the people who
listen to an MP3 from the Reverend's server want to buy the whole CD
if they like the music?

Where would one get the possibility to listen to your catalogue to
get an opinion on an act, if not on the net?

I guess you end up getting MORE orders if only single songs are
available.

Just an idea.

Michael.

We've been through this before -- the last time Steve asked
someone to take down Cuneiform-related stuff, in fact. I asked this same
question and was told that Cuneiform has samples on-line already at their
web-site, and that they wish to control the way that this free advertising
is used.

I think their issue is wanting control about how it is presented
on the Net.

I think so too, but I also respect Steve's wishes.

Hey!!!!!

Very cool that someone uploaded "This Golden Voyage" from the Under The
Sun "1997 Demos + Bonus Live Tracks" rom. However, it is identified on
RMP3 as "This Golden Fleece". Perhaps the Rev. would be so good as to
change this.

Thanks

My apologies, Bob. I must have lost your message. Or just my mind. :(

The point is NOT to hold songs, not whole albums. Why buy them, then?

The ONLY case when I'll do this is if the album is so amazingly out of
print that this is the only way it'll ever get heard. I'll probably ask
here whether it is or not. The goal is to sell albums. There are a
couple instances where there's more than one song. No more than 2, but
(for instance) Payne's Gray has two distinct styles. I included one of
each. I couldn't find a representative track on "Kadath Decoded" (a must
own), so I put 2 out of 10 or so up.

My collection post was what I own on CD. If there's an album you'd like to
hear, let me know. I plan on encoding 1 track from each album eventually,
but this way it's higher on the list. I have no plans to do whole albums; my
hard drive is almost full now! (thank god for CD-Rs... once I fill up, I'll
burn them on CDs and alternate every few weeks)

Any questions, feel free to e-mail me or post here.

I'm not sure what legalities and licensing is involved, but I'd like to
put my show on the net in MP3. I hear that streaming MP3 is coming soon,
which may be a better way. Maybe we could work together on this.

Hey, John. (Long time no hear!) Couple options: your station is already
streaming realaudio, try to convince them to support Shoutcast. I don't
know bandwidth concerns, although you can adjust each stream from 2K-12K
per second, so anyone from Modems to Cable Modem can hear, depending on
the size. They probably already are "legit" for this, so you'd just
have to convince them of the benefit. I don't know how well Shoutcast
handles multiple people on one connection. (RealAudio might multicast;
I don't know). But take a gander at what's available; go grab mp3spy
(from www.gamespy.com), a copy of WinAmp, and a Fast connection (so you
can see what you can make available)

I have yet to hear a MP3 streaming broadcast (ala Shoutcast) that didn't suffer
from •severe• breakup problems- except during low traffic periods on the
'Net...and the problem is not AOL as I access that service from my primary ISP
via TCP. Maybe it's different for those using ISDN or better, but at 56K it's
a technology that still needs lots of work.

To tell you the truth, I never considered that! Seeing as I do most all of my
web stuff at work through a 100mbps LAN connection, I kinda take the speed for
granted. OTOH, the technologies are still in their infancy. We could see
something outstanding in the near future that makes conversations like this one
pretty moot. There's a new Quicktime beta that hardradio is using for
streaming audio that can show some promise. It's a bit flangey, however it
delivers a stereo mid-fi signal at around 30K (I think). Multiple connections?
Dunno. But remember the early days of RealAudio and look how far things have
gotten in only 3 or 4 years...

The best sounding "realtime" broadcast was one that used Java code as the
delivery system. Can't remember the system name/developer or the Netcaster
that used it, only that it was a college station in California It sounded
pretty impressive at the time- and that was well over a year ago.

I'd say you should definetely check out Quicktime. The server is open
source, which means you can even hire a geek to make tailor it to your
specific needs! :)
As it stands, Quicktime is noticeably better than RealPlayer G2 for
streaming video. For pure audio, I suppose it would be better too,
because it uses the Sorenson codec, which is simply amazing.
If you want to check out some Quicktime clips, my page has some:

They're not streaming, at least not in the true sense, but they will
start playing as soon as a good part of the file is loaded. On your fast
link, they should start playing immediately.
