I'm involved in a research project and need a piece of information
about JEM Imports that was based in South Plainfield, New Jersey.

I understand from my Google searches that JEM filed for bankruptcy in
1988. But I'm thinking something negative happened to them in the late
1970s because I distinctly remember a large record store in Buffalo,
NY, where I grew up, all of sudden got this enormous stock of imports
that they were selling on the cheap. I still have a tattered 1976 JEM
Records Import Catalog that served as my bible back in the day and
ended up finding many of these treasures when that record store got
all this stock.

I don't recall the exact year. I just know it was late in the 70s. Of
the information I found while searching the web I did see that "In
1977, Jem ended its partnership with Sire after Mr. Stein sold the
company to Warner Bros.". So I'm not sure if that caused them to
unload stock or something else.

Could be any of a dozen reasons, but IIRC that's right around the time
they started and almost immediately abandoned their own (USA) domestic
record label. They manufactured records that in earlier years they
just would have heavily imported. One was Van Der Graaf's "Vital".

I ran across your pist about JEM. Fyi, the company, which was public, was taken over by a a scam (legal as it actually was) in 1987. They took it bankrupt. NONE OF THE 3 original owners had any part in this. There was nothing in 1978 except great business. There was some suspect importing by an upper NY major retailer that was bringing tons if records from Canada
