I agree and I've only heard up through 8 and 11-18. They are playing
'songs' really well...it's a much more Dead-like approach to things I
think. Rock heavy in Set 1, improv heavy in the first half of Set 2
then bring it home with a bang. Not at all like the late 90's or
Phish 2.0 when a 25 minute exploration could pop up at any point. I
think a lot of the people who started seeing Phish at this time are
the ones griping about the current playing.

Absolutely what I have noticed as well. The old fans and the real new
fans are more in tune with PHiSH in '09. It's mostly the ones who
jumped on "ter" in '98 - '03 who are griping about the lack of 25+
minute meandering nowhere jams.

I dunno...over time I come to enjoy most all flavors of Phish. There
are times when I really want some of that Summer '94 intensity, then
others when I'm looking to get swept up by the 7-30-03 Scents. Since
Phish has started playing again I am able to put the time period we
are speaking about into better perspective. The dope ended up taking
over and crushing them, but it also gave them a (superficial?) degree
of artistic freedom from a psychological standpoint. Some of the
Dead's best shows came from the Spring of '77 and Jerry reportedly
started using around this time. Since the band has been able to
straighten themselves out, for some reason I'm able to listen to those
shows much more objectively than I could in, say, 2005. I was bitter
and broken after the Coventry "experience", so I didn't listen to them
for a LONG time. When I finally returned in October of last year, the
hard feelings were gone, and I just really started to find enjoyment
in the little things happening in each show. Now my thought is: who
am I to judge what someone wants to do with their life? Shit
happens...I'm just glad people were there to record it :).

years listening to the boys very little, and then they got back
together.
summer was so much fun, but fall was an absolute highlight of my 114
shows.
BTW thanks Lieb for putting me on the guest list for Matisyahu here in
Cincy. ill be taping, and anyone who wants it, its yours. love this
