Oh man, I won't get started on the chump of jam, but he's the reason I
let my Sirius subscription lapse. Can't they put that guy on some lame
station, to go with his lame personality? Why do they have to ruin such
a great station with such an idiot?

I know it's sort of bad form to criticize another radio brother, but I
totally disown that dork. I figured out what it is about him that bugs
me so much. It's that he makes listeners feel like he's in the cool
kids club and none of the listeners could ever be that cool.

What a terrible vibe. I'm from the school of inclusion...I want
everyone to feel like they could hang with me and any of my guests,
rather than feel they're listening to a party they're just not cool
enough to be invited to.

I refuse to listen to Jam ON until the corporal of jam is booted from
service. Unfortunately he's been there for a while now and doesn't
appear to be going anywhere...literally and figuratively. I have enough
music to keep me entertained without Sirius..that guy can ruin the best
jams simply by opening his mouth and saying something stupid, which in
my opinion is just about every time the rent a cop of jam cracks the mic.

To top it off, they have the guy voice tracking and he's terrible at it.
For anyone who has ever voice tracked a show, it's pretty obvious how
limited his command of the technology is. I used to be an afternoon guy
and to save money, my station fired the overnight guy and had me voice
track the show...so I was on 12 hours a day (but only live for 6 hours).
I was proud of the fact that most people thought I was on live for 2
shifts a day.

Alright, I said I wasn't going to get started on the hall monitor of
jam, but I'm done. The guy makes me want to puke when I listen to that
station, so I no longer even have Sirius in case I get tempted to listen
to my favorite station on there.

They should make him listen to Pat St. John on the Classic station...now
that guy is a model jock...friendly and informative...is it so hard
Johnny boy?

Well that's my rant for today, glad I got that off my chest. I'm just
sorry everybody had to endure such an ass, to hear such a great concert.
If the dude was a true fan and had any clout there, he would have had
a board op and been at the show, maybe broadcasting live.

I almost got fired one time because I went to Lemonwheel. The year
before, they wouldn't let me off the air for a week to make The Clifford
Ball...something about my contract and a ratings period...chumps. I had
a clause put in with the GM for the next year. I was number one in my
market, I asked how bad they could screw up my show (and my ratings) in
a week.

Just another example of why I'm syndicating my own show...stay
tuned...so to speak.

Peace,

Dave

Dave, how long did you think it would take me to reply to this? :)
I'm gonna keep it brief, because I don't want to argue so much as just
add my POV to this conversation . . .

As you know from conversations we've had privately, I don't agree with
your opinion on JS. Perhaps because I'm not a radio insider, perhaps
because I'm relatively new to the Phish scene.

As a "noob" I'm not even close to being in the "cool kids" club (hey
who we kidding, I'm the coolest;)) so from that perspective, I
appreciate his insights, although I *do* see and understand how other
more advanced listeners would agree with your POV.

FWIW, I've never felt excluded by JS.

Now that's really unfortunate because imo, there's a lot of good stuff
being played on JamOn and considering that JS talks for literally
minutes each hour, he's a very small percentage of the total
programming that's available on the station.

Interesting. I find myself appreciating his POV about Phish, maybe
because he's been with it and around it a lot longer than me.

Ahhh, Pat St John, grew up with him, and Carol Miller, and Zacherly,
and Meg Griffin and Vinny Sclesa (sp?) and all the other great jocks
mostly from and through NYC's WNEW 102.7 and then later on on 92.3 K-
Rock. No argument from me there, those guys were tops!

Sirius has no money, they operate on a shoestring. I don;t seehow you

Looking forward to that Dave, I'll be listening! Keep us posted on
that!

And since we're busting on JamOn jocks, can I vent a little bit about
Stef Scamardo and her never ending plays of all things Warren? ;-)

And just to end on a happy note, I absolutely *love* listening to
Emily Anton (Aunty Em) on weekend mornings, and I really used to enjoy
Buddy Cage (from the New Riders) weekday mornings! Man I wish they'd
bring Buddy back!

Just for the record, the cool kids club doesn't exist. It's created
by the un-cool kids to exclude the cool kids from making a cool kids
club.

Exactly my point. What I meant was he uses his little insider tags,
like when he calls the Radiators the Rads. If you're job is to
celebrate the genre and turn people on to things they don't get exposure
to on terrestrial radio, then why would you use your own little made up
nickname for a band that is new to many listeners?

Seriously, I had a friend ask me who this band the Rads were, because
they couldn't find them anywhere. After I explained they were a new
Orleans band called the Radiators and loaned him some discs, this friend
is now a major fan of the band...and equally annoyed at JS (and he's not
an insider, just a music fan who doesn't appreciate the poseur we're
referring to).

Okay, so it's on, eh?

Perhaps I'm listening with a more critical ear, or maybe it's just
because I know people like him, but I've had program directors who
would've put his ass on overnights and if he didn't get a better clue
about how to check his ego, he'd be looking for a new job.

I know, there is a lot of great stuff on there, though they do seem to
repeat a lot of songs from artists they could further explore with a
larger play list...which is why I payed for satellite radio in the first
place.

He does occasionally have good information (as he should with the access
he has), but in my opinion, he could do a much better job of being
informative to both veterans and newbies alike.

Man, you should have heard Detroit radio in the seventies. I realize
I'm holding the guy to a high standard, but he is on a world-wide
satellite station, can you get a potentially larger audience?

Yea, I know, but I would have fought the good fight and paid for my own
trip. I guarantee it would've been fun to hear someone running around
and reporting live in between sets. That's not really a fair criticism,
I know, but it occurred to me during the conversation.

I used to love to do live updates from concerts. I would have a little
transmitter on my belt, under my shirt and a little Walkman in my pocket
with an ear bud for a monitor. I had this little cordless mic and I
could enjoy the show and then go live whenever needed. Great fun for me
and the listeners. I even lost my glasses in the main floor crush at a
RHCP concert one time, had to drive back to the station with shades on
at night...very rock star.

Thanks, I need to get back to work instead of bitching about some dude
who I don't even listen to anymore. i just started thinking about
having to endure that guy to listen to NYE on Sirius. Are there any
other outlets that you know of? Phish should sell a simulcast and play
the Bunny, or the archives during set break...maybe an interview, or
something in between.

> And since we're busting on JamOn jocks, can I vent a little bit about
> Stef Scamardo and her never ending plays of all things Warren? ;-)

Yea, that's a more difficult one for me, as you know. Even though I
knew Warren, I had never met his wife, so when I first started listening
to Jam On, I didn't realize Stef was his wife. That's a little
uncomfortable for me.

I don't want to critique any more radio people, it just makes me look
bad. I should have Kept my thoughts to myself. But I just couldn't
read people saying that was the only thing about 8 that they didn't
like, without adding my two cents worth of agreement. I'm just glad I
got to see/hear it without the hall monitor of jam being the filter.

Okay, last thing. Why would anyone give themselves such a pompous and
stupid moniker as the "General of Jam". Hey, I grew up with and even
worked with "The Doc of Rock", Doug Podell and Aurther "Baby" Penhallow,
even a young Howard Stern (before he was a star), I get it. But I
seriously doubt someone came up to him and said "Hey, you should call
yourself the General of Jam" and if he thought of it all by himself,
well, that just proves my point about him being out of touch...not only
with his audience, but with reality. But hey, what do I know?

If he's good enough for Marcman, who am I to complain. Now about that
Stern guy...he he he.

I totally agree about Auntie Em, I think she's adorable, a nice
counterpoint to Stef's...shall we say...no, I won't say it. Let's just
say they have different personas.

Right on, dude. there is absolutely no reason for the repetitiveness
in the play lists. Now I don't know if that's JS' fault, Stef's fault
or if they have a programming guy, but this free form satelite radio
and the nature of the music we love would seem to lend itself to more
diversity. I mean obviously there are certain bands that are going to
get more coverage than others on JamOn, but why the same cuts over and
over?

I can get behind this. I got bored with JamOn quite quickly. If I
have to hear 'don't touch my stuff', 'light of the moon', or every
franti/spearhead song again......... There is so much *real* jam
music to tap into and yet I never found a band on JamOn, not one, that
I went and explored later. It's like Easy Listening Jam....Jam
Lite....(insert more puns here). I get exposed to better music at the
setbreak (honestly, I do!).

I couldn't agree more. I should probably lay off JS and SC and blame
the program director. That was really the reason I quit paying for
Sirius...too much of the same stuff, over and over, every day. Maybe
that's the problem with JS, he can't think of much new to say about the
same songs all the time.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the strange infatuation with
Franti and Spearhead. It really is the same with the other stations
though too, so it's not just Jam On, but perhaps it's most glaring on
that station because there is so much potential for that genre.

By the way, did you check out the Miles Davis set break music at 8?
Very nice touch, we had a nice percussion groove going on down in front
jamming at set break.

It must be a JamOn thing (as opposed to a JS thing) because today at
around 8pm they played the Radiators cover of Van Morrison's Domino
(killer version by the way) and Stef announced them as the Rads.

The worst part of 8 was the fucking piece of shit security guards/
thieves...Phish festivals were never like this in the past...Bag
checks and frisking when you enter concert grounds is a bunch of
bullshit and motherfuckers in yellow shirts walking around with
impunity stealing whatever they felt like from campsites(some friends
caught two young guards snooping in their neighbors camp between sets
one night) and if they are supposed to protect us why do they just
steal peoples herb, beer, and liquor...FUCK THIS FESTIVAL BULLSHIT!!!!
Phish has to do something different about the security at future

defend ourselves against "the security" and start a fucking riot...

My biggest complaint was the lack of water. They had more beer lines
than people there, but only 2-3 water refill locations. Plus having
to dump the water before going in? It's a desert....sheeeesh....

Does any one remember vegas 04 (or might have been 03) when they
turned off the cold water in the bathrooms so people had to pay for
water? I almost burned my hands after using the bathroom!
Soooooooooooo pissed.

Bag checks and frisking when you enter a venue is commonplace and to
be expected.

> and motherfuckers in yellow shirts walking around with

Your friends that caught them trespassing in your tent, and invading
your privacy and attempting to steal your shit gave them impunity by
not following up once they saw the yellow shirts illegal
accessingtheir personal belongings.

> and if they are supposed to protect us why do they just

Herb and liquor were on the prohibited list, so if you or your friends
brought it in and then left it unattended in your tent while you went
to see the show, well then, what are you gonna do, call a cop and
complain that somebody stole yoru drugs?

Uh, too harsh? Hardly. Nothing like a good riot to ruin any shred of
the benefit of the doubt many long time phans may still get about our
scene. Idiots have been trying to ruin things for years, but the scene
always wins out. Even stuff like the Red Rocks insanity finally wore
off, probably because most of those pretenders have moved on to another
scene that's more their speed.

I saw some You Tube stuff on that recently. What really pissses me off
is the news coverage calling the rioters fans of the band...that's the
farthest thing from the truth possible. All the true fans bought
tickets and went in, the trouble came from all the idiots standing
around with a finger in the air, begging for a miracle.

Fucking losers, I can't stand seeing these poseurs who can somehow
afford to make it from city to city, eat, drink some dank beer and smoke
some heady nugs, trip every night...but they just can't seem to budget
any funds to actually buy a ticket and see the band they're supposedly
following because they're such dedicated fans. Dedicated fans my ass,
they're dedicated to fucking up a cool scene, not supporting the band,
or the community.

Sorry, I got off on a tangent there.

What I'd like to know is why they didn't call the police when they
caught someone in the act (security or not). "Officer, I was breaking
about 10 laws and someone came and violated my property and stole the
stuff I wasn't supposed to have anyway"...yea, I'd like to see that
response.

Any half-baked stoner knows to hide your shit and not flaunt stuff at a
campground. Sure it sucks that someone might go through your things
when you're not there...you can buy a nice lock for your tent for about
5 bucks, and last time I checked, most relatively modern vehicles have
locks. Yes, the vehicle could get broken into and the tent could get
cut, but they are supposed to have security watching things like that,
especially during the show, when few people are around to see it.

If the security really did what he said, I can't imagine it's a wide
spread problem, and I find it a bit hard to believe that no other
security personnel didn't see/stop such antics. And if it really did
happen, why bitch here and propose a riot to solve the problem, rather
than seek proper authorities. If it happened to me...and I saw it,
somebody's going to jail or the hospital (or both) and it won't be me in
either case, I can assure you of that. Gentle hippie my ass, if I catch
you stealing my shit, I'm going to fuck someone up...or at least make
sure they're in handcuffs before I rest for the night.

Speaking of things getting stolen at the campground, someone stole my
lobster right off the pole during the third night's sets...and they
stole my plastic jackolantern full of candy I left out for whomever
might want some. But seriously, I think a riot might be just a little
bit of an overreaction.

It sucks that people steal shit, but that's life...the valuable stuff
was locked up...and if someone really wants that old lobster that's
survived several Burning Man festivals and numerous Phish Phests,
thanks, I needed a new one anyway and I just couldn't part with that
one, so they did me a favor.

My bitch is with the rule changes from the printed instructions. Who's
going to pay me for the "factory sealed water" I bought specifically to
take in as instructed, that I had to dump out to get into the concert
grounds...only to see some asshole walking around with an 18"
bong...after I practically had a cavity search.

Then there's the security to get in, going through an aspirin container
and taking a jack knife and threatening to take my hammer I use for tent
stakes (we were camping right?). Then the next day I see some wookie
walking around with a fucking dog, pissing on everybody's tent as they
went by. Or the NO2 tanks everywhere while others had to empty their
vehicles. Seriously, I'm not ready to riot, but what the fuck?

I just want some consistency, it's not like they had a huge crowd to
deal with and they still can't all get on the same page at the same time.

I'm just sayin'...

Methinks you expect too much from a bunch of low-wage temp workers,
asking for professionalism and consistency.

My take - and it varies from place to place - the rules and those
folks that are tased to enforce them are there to keep the level of
illegal things down to a certain acceptable minimum. The Gorge is a
good example - they said "no pets, etc, etc, etc" (I think they
allowed glass), a lot like the F8 rules, and then they basically let
you drive right in without a search whatsoever. We're seasoned
veterans, and also responsible dog owners, and we were prepared to
"hide" our dog but discovered this wasn't necessary. There were still
tons of dogs, but there woulda been more if they hadn't said "no pets"
in the rules.

For F8, turns out we presented a good image to the "screener" of the
two-man search team with our talk and 6yr old daughter, and we didn't
have a single bag searched, nor nothing removed from our truck. They
didn't even open the cooler. We had nothing to hide since we didn't
think there was any way to get the dog in, and we had bad canned beer,
but we *could've* brought in a N20 tank or whatever. But my point
stands - the rules made us not attempt things but there will always be
rule breakers that get caught, and quite a few rule breakers that are
skilled or lucky enough to get past security.

The concert venue entry was completely hit-or-miss - go in during rush
hour and it's easy to sneak crap, go in when it's quiet and they
search thoroughly. My buddy didn't even bother buying a ticket, since
he easily entered the venue 8 or 10 times the whole weekend. Seems
they were looking for everything *except* a wristband.

Wow, that's impressive...I mean from the standpoint of being ballsy.
But you're absolutely right, it's hit or miss. I've gotten into
concerts without tickets before...in the confusion, they aren't even
considering that, it's kind of assumed that everyone has a ticket (or in
this case a wrist band).

But I wouldn't risk something like that not working, for something as
important as F8. Like your dog, I agree you have a decent chance of
pulling it off, but what if they caught you, what would you do? I'd be
more worried about having to make emergency decisions under adverse
circumstances, i.e., finding a place to board the dog when you're
already in line to go in and you don't know the area and maybe it's
after hours...that's just too many what ifs for me. It's hassle enough
taking the basics in, without having to worry about all that.

Having said that, we drove right into Bonnaroo a few years ago with
several tanks. It's all in how you play it. I made the mistake of
pissing of the supervisor on the way into the campground at F8, but it
all worked out. You're right about expecting too much...did you get the
Mexican's who didn't speak English parking you in camp? Nice touch.

Sounds to me like the issues are pretty typical of any large scale
event. It would seem to me from most reports and people that overall
the event was a success and quite enjoyable.

I would agree, in general they do a pretty good job. Even things like
Big Cypress with the over-flowing porta johns, or IT with the mud were
still incredible experiences. Whenever you get that many people
together in such circumstances, it's quite an impressive feat to keep
most people happy and relatively comfortable.

As far as the crowd and even security, I think the key is that we're all
there for the same band and most people are in a relatively similar
mode. You need only look at the last Woodstock to see what happens when
you mix Sheryl Crow fans with Metallica fans...different modes that
don't blend well at all...then throw in over-flowing johns, mud, heat
and 4$ bottles of water and it's like lighting a powder keg.

I was at Oswego for Phish the week before Woodstock and it was only
about 50 miles away too. But I had someone ask me if I was going after
the Phish Phest and I said no way, not with that mix of ingredients (not
to pick on Metallica...The Insane Clown Posse was...uh, insane?).

We were 60,000 strong with no problems for three days and a half hour
away, a week later, a similar size crowd took to rioting, raping,
pillaging...no thank you. I'm good in my Phish world, my mosh pit days
are over...actually I've always hated the mosh pit. Why can't they do
that shit some other place than the best spot to wtch the band? I know,
i get it, but it's not like they're even looking at the stage, while
people like me are trying to actually see the stage...and keep from
having some asshole land on my head, or take my knees out.

You gotta love the live experience, but it aint easy.

Later,

I had a great time too actually....A Phucking Awesome Time...

the friends that caught the security shadily snooping through camp
went to a supervisor who told them "this private property we can do
whatever we want" and that's the vibe those assholes rolled with...
And riot may be a bit far but personally defending myself is in
order...And anyone that knows anything about Red Rocks knows the cops
were blamed for starting that "riot", it was even reported in the
local media that way right afterwards....

and I don't give a fuck about a prohibited list I'm a freedom loving
American who earned the right to intoxicate myself however I choose,
YOU DON'T FUCKING STEAL PEOPLE'S STUFF EVER!!!! Only pieces of shit
with dead end lives would take a job like that and then take advantage
of it....

"If the security really did what he said, I can't imagine it's a wide

I've worked security at a ski resort for years and with the cops being
local as well as the security trust me police reports would do
nothing, local police and local security have each other's backs
regardless of "facts"..."Gentle hippie my ass, if I catch you stealing
my shit, I'm going to fuck someone up" and the riot I was proposing
sounds a lot like someone ending up in the hospital so I think we're
on the same page here...basically I'm saying if security is a bunch of
low rent thieves then pushing back a little(or a lot) may be necessary
to establish that we are not in fact gentle hippies who will turn the
other cheek no matter how hard they fuck with us...

Mr. Miner's side of things:

"If Coventry embodied the dark debacle that Phish and their scene had
become by 2004, Festival 8 represented all that is right in the
current world of Phish. The most accurate word I can use to describe
Festival 8 is “paradise.” We had arrived at a tropical site of dreams,
and the entire place was set up for our ease and comfort. When
contrasting Coventry’s mud-covered clusterfuck with Indio’s days of
delight, things couldn’t have felt more different."

Sorry Charlie, you have earned no such right. Do something besides
inciting a riot, however, to change the laws that need to be changed
and I'd back you 100%.

In the meantinme, when you buy your ticket you *agree* to abide by the
rules set forth by the venue and the band. Period the fucking end.

LOL I can handle harshness(Phish lots always been full of it)...and
I've been on here a while with out feeling the "wrath" of marcman so
I'm due I'm sure lol...

An anecdote that led to my fucked up state of mind: Sat. night just
before the halloween set I'm in my tent looking for my tube of
glowsticks being as innocent as possible when this guy leans in and
says step out here for a second, I'm like why, he says in all dour
seriousness "I'm a cop"(he was completely plainclothes), I say
"So"(remember I'm simply in my tent minding my own business), he's
like get out here, Next thing I know he's got my hands my behind my
back and is searching my backpack, I still don't know what's going on,
he's like are you camped with these people(pointing to a couple dudes
in costumes I didn't recognize but our camp was like 25 people not all
of whom I knew well) luckily I said "I'm camped here but I'm not with
anybody", turns out the two dudes in costume were some dealers(not
with my group) selling to an undercover right next to my tent, they
found my herb and hash but luckily I'm a medical marijuana patient
here in California and even more lucky for me I'd jokingly secretly
stashed my one drop of felony in my Phish hat "secret stash pocket"
I've had the hat for like 8 years but never really used the secret
pocket and only put anything there to be funny...turns out Karma had
my back on that one...

I don't go to shows looking to start riots it's just sometimes I get
pushed over and over again by little things...bribing the guards at
the main gate to not rip everything out of my car, camping in Hunky
Dory with floodlights blaring on me like it's guantanomo, aggressive
searches entering the concert grounds(a first for me at what was my
4th Phestival), dickhead security that jacks people's booze to get
drunk on later, general rudeness and aggression in all rule
enforcement, and undercovers and shithead dealers trying to pull me
into multiple felonies...All I'm saying is shit happens but it doesn't
have to be that shitty...
