"Heavy Metal Bass Solo" -- 11/25/09

Hola, I have listened to the Wilson bass solo + was wondering if the
heavy metal bass players would care to comment on its merits. I do not
consider it all that Metalic, but I am no expert...

I think that the only authentic Heavy Metal Bass solo I have ever seen
was during the Dream Theater show I saw in Minnesota, which was epic
and long and very "pyrotechnic"--kind of a "slap-bass" meets "way-to-
many-notes-all-at-once" type thing. It was much less funky then this
Wilson solo by Mike.

Also, I have seen Victor Wootan. He may have done a Heavy Metal Bass
solo, but it is hard to tell--he is freakin soloing the entire show!
Wootan's jamming is similar to what Mike does, but even more Funky--in
fact the last time I saw Wootan he went through a variety of time
signatures (starting at 11/4, then 7/5[?], 4/4, 3/4...) demonstrating
that each had its own unique Funk, culminating in his scientific proof
that even the One had funk. Thanks, David S...

iam not a heavy metal fan, but damn my brother sure is. he once took
me to see the band Korn, and the bassist had a solo that was actually
kinda mindblowing for metal. he used this slap method that you dont
hear alot in metal. he also had this old metallica video of the
bassist that died doing a solo that was pretty damn good.
i was just listening to the 12/25/09 show, it was the last one i
downloaded before my computer went boom.
BTW wooten live is not to be missed. manfred and i were just chatting
via phone about who was the best bassist you saw live. our list
contained lesh, gordon, entwistle, claypool, wooten, and i few others.

so who is the best bassist you saw live rmp?

Best Live Bass Player would be a toss up between Les Claypool and
Flea. As far as best Bass Solo I think it is hard to beat Cliff
Burton's solo on Kill 'em All, (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth.

What, no Gene Simmons?

I gotta add Jack Bruce to that list too, but John Entwistle was not only
one of the best, but loud, did I say LOUD? I mean hearing loss loud. I
was telling DEG about an Entwistle solo show that I saw in a club
(Harpo's in Detroit) and it might have been one of the loudest shows
I've ever seen, definitely the loudest I ever saw that wasn't a major
production.

How about Tony Levin, that guy can really play...and those finger
sticks. Oteil is great and I'll always love Alan Woody too, not to
mention that he was such a nice guy, as well...one of my favorite bass
lines is Govt. Mule's Thorazine Shuffle, the whole song is a bass solo.

Honorable mention:

Roger Glover (I think Deep Purple was always underrated musically, just
great musicians all the way around, especially since Steve Morse replace
Blackmore).

That's my morning thought for the day, I need to go rest my brain.

nice call on Roger Glover, one of the first records i ever owned was
made in japan. truly underated.
BTW why does everyone on RMGD hate deep purple? any reason, or just
alot of snotty deadheads?
