I am looking to trade my set of Solti Ring (near-mint condition) for
the 1966-70 Karjan set. I am in Los Angeles area.

Private message is fine. Thanks,

Figaro

I can't imagine anyone taking that deal.

No, I can't.

First, on artistic merits; second, because the Solti is slated for a
newly remastered re-release this fall as part of Decca observing what
would have been his 100th b'day, so why trade for yesterday's
technology?

When it comes to the singers involved, it's a wash. Each set has it's
strengths and weaknesses. For me, Windgassen's Siegfried is a major
liability on the Solti set, with Hotter well past his prime. Dernesch
is no Nilsson for Karajan, and FiDi is no George London. Taken as a
whole, I greatly prefer the Karajan.

Although I'm usually much more inclined to prefer Karajan to Solti, in
this case it's more of a toss-up due to the casting. I prefer
Karajan's Rheingold and Walkure (except for Act 1, where Karajan's
cast is largely asleep at the switch), and Solti's Gotterdammerung.
Siegfried is more or less a tie, largely because Stolze is virtually
unlistenable for Solti (and much better for Karajan).
