You sort out the flights, Mrs Jones and I'll get a hotel booked through
my work. I get very good discounts on all the 4 and 5 star hotels in
New York....
We ought to book for at least 3 performances, as he's bound to be sick
for at least 2 of them.....
Oh! I hope they'll have lots of furniture abuse in it.......

have you actually *heard* him sing Wotan yet?
He was amazing when he did the role in London this year and the press
were pretty unanimous that his was a truly great interpretation.....

He wouldn't say who the director is going to be but lets hope for one
who has a strong dislike of furniture. Of course Bryn will be 46 by
then...I hope his ability to throw a sofa won't be on the wane!

I understand the Met generally tend to go for traditional productions,
so I fear we're not going to see him stomping around in another black
evening dress and tiara.....
I wonder if it'll be a new production, or the classic traditional one
that I have on DVD with James Morris?
Good news too about Wanderer in London. Guess I'll have to psych
myself up for sitting through Siegfried again (groan!)

I heard the Wotan. It was a work in progress. It's not fully realized
but, hopefully, it will be by 2011.
I think he often croons and uses a falsetto voice. He's getting lazy
and he needs to re-focus or he's going to become a joke. Like Fleming.
Hey - I was good and bought his new crossover album now....... much of
it is quite acceptably pleasant - and even when I don't want to listen
to it, the photo on the cover is worth the price of the CD alone.....

They'll have to be baroque timps because they are the only timps I can
lift single handed. Adams machine timps require a trolley and four
cursing Czech orchestral attendants and I cannot afford to import them.

I am sure he will be fine. In fact I think he has been a sensible lad
in not engaging to do it before his forties. I believe there is
discussion on some groups on people who did things too soon and burned
out vocally. Depends on the singer, of course, but as previously
posted, I actually happen to trust his own judgments. And the children
will be older:):)
This is a musician with a life, including outside music, if no one had
noticed. I missed a lot of my two growing up, something I deeply
regret.

I did my best but sometimes seven nights a week is not helpful.
OK, I'll rephrase that as "vast majority". Naturally I have a
particular interest in this topic and read all the reviews religiously
at the time. The ones I read generally raved about his sensitive
performance, his meticulous detail to the text, his musicality, his
acting etc. - and although I remember one review that did say it was a
work in progress, there were no reviews I saw that were particularly
negative about his singing/interpretation. I feel you're being rather
harsh saying he'll sing Wotan like the man of La Mancha.
I would honestly say that the first time I heard him in Walkuere - on
12 March - was the single most amazing performance I have ever
experienced in my entire life and I was in floods of tears by the end.
I doubt I will ever witness anything again *that* good.

Its going to be the same MET production they are doing now - they will be
making some changes in it the next few years but it will be the same Schenk
production

Excellent! I really liked that production - I think that visually it's
the most impressive Ring cycle I've seen - especially that rainbow at
the end of Rheingold. Can't wait to see it live as I've led a
sheltered existance and never been to the Met before.
The only criticism I have is the lack of furniture abuse, but hopefully
this is something they'll rectify before Bryn takes over :-)
I fear it's probably going to be hell on earth to get tickets for
though?

Considering the number of empty seats at the MET so far this season I'm not
so sure - although Wagner tends to sell well - I'm sure what I'll see at
Bayreuth next year will be VERY different Richard

I cannot say about Mr Terfel in Man of La Mancha but I toured with this
show and assuming it is the piece with music by Mitch Leigh we were
sold out every night and it is a tough score to both sing and play.
Our edition had no strings: just woodwind, brass and percussion in the
very small pit orchestra.
I had never played the piece before but no doubt if Mr Terfel ever
attempts it he will give it the same respect I did.
In my tour, all the artists had had voice lessons and all the small
orchestra had studied at one of the Czech conservatoires. Otherwise we
might not have managed what one newspaper (okay, it was only Ostrava)
said: "A wonderful night with a wonderful score. On the surface such a
story, silly as it is, should not possibly be deeply moving and yet it
was. Wonderful and committed playing from the artists of the National
Theatre."
We actually toured with a trained belly dancer for the sensuous
sequence that this musical requires of which the Ostrava report said:
".....one thing that almost stopped the show was the belly-dancing
sequence. Erotic on stage (performer Jana Vlasankova) but taken to the
depths of Arabia by both her and the principal wind and percussion
player in this small orchestra."
Fair enough if you want to have a go at Mr Terfel (no doubt Mrs Terfel
xx and Mrs Jones will say what they will in his defence) but I am
speaking up for Mitch Leigh (if that is the score to which you refer).
Well, he was wonderful in the black sparkly dress in Faust - so I look
forward to seeing him with some long blonde plaits and a horned
helmet......
