In the last few weeks at various events, I have found myself meeting such
artists of the past as Frank Guarrera,Theodore Uppman,Enrico Di Giuseppe,Lucine
Amara,Elaine Malbin,Leyla Gencer, Licia Albanese,and Fedora Barbieri. I am
always so very respectful of these individuals, knowing of their past triumphs,
and realizing full well that they represent a tiny percent of even the most
talented musicians..but the difference is that THEY MADE IT.... enjoying long
and successful careers before the public, often in times of illness and personal
tragedy.
I wonder just how they feel knowing that they no longer can appear
before the public in full operas on a regular basis. Yes,they conduct master
classes, teach young people, serve on juries, and in general are inspirational
figures to the young artists of today, but I often ask myself if it is not at
times quite difficult for them to accept the fact that they can no longer bask
in the glory that they once enjoyed..all that love..all that applause.
This is one reason why I constantly pay tribute to them,on their
birthdays, or if I attend events where they appear either as members of the
audience or featured as teacher or coach, for I know that they have given so
much to my generation of opera lovers., and they must not be forgotten.
Someone once asked Renata Tebaldi what she does with her time
after retirement, and she answered, "I am honored." Yes, this is something she
and other even less famous artists should enjoy..namely "being honored' for
their marvelous contributions to music, and we should all spend quality time in
our lives paying tribute to them, usually in private, listening to their
recordings and/or reading of their various achievements. We do this with sports
heroes, retired actors, and others who have made their mark on society.
I wish that there should be more "events" at which more of these
wonderful artists, some of them not as famous as a Tebaldi, should be
recognized and honored. The Met,not particularly concerned with "operatic
nostalgia" rarely seems to care about these people, but at least some of us
recall them fondly and often seek to remind others of what they were. This was
the spirit of the recent afternoons honoring such former stars as Frank
Guarrera, Martha Eggerth, and Fedora Barbieri. Let's keep the flame glowing
as long as we are around!!! My best Charlie

Have you thought about renting a big bus and taking them all on a picnic,
Sir? You could have a singalong on the bus and then at the beach they could
tell each other stories about their career highlights. And you could tell
them all about how you learned the Sacristan role and sang it in a
restaurant. And you could also tell them all of your Zinka Milanov antidotes
and how you think that German guy stinks. I bet they would love all that. I
would be glad to go along and report on the event. Ms. Olsen (no relation)
thinks it would be a big boost to my career. But I'm only a kid so I don't
know if she's right or not.

I agree with you, especially when you speak about Leyla Gencer, Fedora

Callas system existed that was very closed. Today , Jolanda speaks
with nostalgy of that past time, the rare recordings with Deutsch
Grammophon ,nuova era in which we can hear her voice( especially the
Pia de Tolomei, beautiful last aria ). She was very active, has
friends like Schwarzkopf, Horne, has worked with famous artists, has
an interesting self story to explain( her granfather , the painter

her joy on her face in front of the standing ovations, on thousand
stage fotos she let me see.
Yes , i thank these artists everyday for the joy they gave to the
