Serious question: is Kaufmann's rendition of Tannhäuser's Rome Narration the best on record?

I know we yet do not know how he he would do in a full assumption of the role. But ignore all that. Compare him to live recordings, studio recordings, complete performances or bleeding chunks. In matters of tonal security and beauty, vocal authority, dramatic insight, and diction, his rendition seems about as good as one could expect to hear ever. Are there better recordings out there? Whose? And please explain to me why you think another recording is better.
