Hey Guys, Gals,
I was wondering if the Group Aphex Twin is considered new age I really
don't know of a category that they would fit in and i have heard that
they are considered a mix of ambient and industrial, what can anyone
tell me about them?
thanks

As a collector of many CD's from a wide area of music I consider the latest CD by Aphex Twin "I Care Because You Do", the worst CD of 1995 (so far). To answer the question does Aphex Twin belong in this category, absolutely not. I'd put Aphex Twin in a category all by itself. No originality, trying to be somewhat of a cross breed of Kraftwerk and Terrorvision. The mix is nauseating. Stay clear.

Aphex Twin is an ambient person, actually, who goes under many names.
They aren't really new age, however: You occasionally get posts in this
group about them and related ambient stuff (the One/Two A.D.
compilations, for instance), but the better place to ask is in the group
rec.music.ambient (if you can wade through it, that is. (: )

Myself, I think they are OK. Ambient wise, I prefer the non-techno stuff
(such as Laraaji and Brian Eno); techno wise, I prefer stuff like The
Orb, or the few ambient/house combo groups out there (Vaporspace, for
instance). But some of their stuff is quite good.

As our breathless and angry consumer friend suggests, if your idea of the
Aphex Twin is defined by the "Selected Ambient Works" releases I and II,
the new one will amost certainly be a disappointment. As an interesting
source of edgy mix located right in the audio irritant range, it's brilliant;
a good deal closer to the less expectationally oriented work found in the
"Analogue Bubblebath" sequence, or the recordings released as Polygon Window.
Since your listening experience may vary from mine, you may find that you
can describe the disc in terms of Kraftwerk and Terrorvision - but if your
listening habits are a trifle more toward the fringe, I'd have put it in
a bit of the range of m-ZIQ's tromp of the Auteurs. New Age it ain't, but
that was done on purpose. Caveat Emptor - particularly if you're a New Age
partisan.

to which i reply

As a collector of many CD's from a wide area of music I consider the

latest CD by Aphex Twin "ŠI Care Because You Do", one of the best CDs of

1995 (so far). To answer the question does Aphex Twin belong in this

category, probably not if you consider newage to be dolphins, nice
relaxing music and sweetness and light. I'd put Aphex Twin in a category
with others who are interested in the sounds of music rather than 'the
sound of music'. it is exciting, frightening and engaging.
