7. This week's top 50:

This week marks one of the biggest changes to the calculation of
the Australian singles chart in its entire history. But first,
a little background information.

Back in April of this year, ARIA published its first ever digital
track chart. Based on sales data from major online music providers
including Apple iTunes, BigPond Music, ninemsn Music and JB Hi-Fi,
the chart ranked the most popular songs people legally purchased
and downloaded via the internet. One interesting feature of that
chart was that different versions of the same song (i.e. different
mixes) were not merged together, and whether a song was
available as a single or not was irrelevant to the eligibility
of tracks to feature on the digital chart. So you saw songs
such as U2 & Mary J Blige's "One" go top 10 on the digital
chart even though they were never released in a physical format
and thus never appeared on the regular singles chart. You also
saw different mixes of the same song chart, as illustrated
lately with both the album and radio remix of Sandi Thom's "I Wish
I Was A Punk Rocker" featuring in the digital track top 10.

The release of a digital track chart back in April was the
precursor for an eventual combined chart that would incorporate
sales of "physical" CD singles with digital tracks purchased from
online retailers. The U.K. singles chart changed to a merged
format in April 2005, and this week sees Australian finally catch
up, albeit 18 months later.

Online music sales have reached a point now where they will
significantly affect the rankings of songs on a singles chart.
It is estimated that around 30% of some song sales are digital
downloads only, and that figure is increasing rapidly, thus
soon we may reach a stage where internet sales of tracks
eclipse those of buyers who walk into a record shop and grab
a CD single off the shelves.

There are a number of rules surrounding the calculation of the
merged singles chart, and surprisingly for an organization
like ARIA which is plagued by chart blunders, most of the new
rules actually appear to make logical sense.

1) Digitally downloaded tracks will only make the chart if
there is a physical version available at the same time.
This will ensure that the merged chart doesn't get
infiltrated by album-only tracks or songs you can't
also buy at record stores. This deviates slightly from
the U.K. policy, whereby a single can begin charting on the
official chart with digital sales alone up to a week before
its official physical release into stores. In the U.K.,
this often results in a single debuting low on digital sales
alone, then shooting up the chart in its second week as
physical sales kick in. In Australia, the differing rules
will ensure that we are still entertained by a regular
flow of high debuting singles rather than the low debut
and bullet climb in the second week, which characterizes the
U.K. singles charts of today.

2) Record labels must nominate which version of a track is the
one to be counted for the survey. As mentioned above, this
is to deal with situations where more than one version or
mix of a song is available for download as the merged chart
should not contain multiple entries for all the different
mixes. This also ensures that sales of physical singles
with multiple tracks do not add one sale per track
onto the charts. Otherwise we would end up with a situation
whereby the sale of one CD single with 6 mixes of a particular
song would add a total of 6 sales (i.e. one for each track)
onto the chart.

3) Double A-sided singles have special rules, as you can
digitally buy half a single in some of those cases. Record
labels must nominate digital sales of which track on the
double A-sided single should count towards the single
entry on the merged chart.

While the merged singles chart (i.e. digital and physical sales)
will now be regarded as Australia's official, for the foreseeable
future a separate physical and digital singles chart will be
issued. This is particularly important so you can observe the
success of songs that are ineligible for the merged chart
(i.e. album-only tracks, songs not issued as physical singles,
and all the separate mixes of a song) and also to see which format
seems to be most popular for a particular song.

The issuing of this week's first merged chart, which spans sales
(both on-line and in record stores) from Saturday 30th September
to Friday 6th October, is dated as the week beginning 9/10/2006
or week ending 15/10/2006. And there's a host of interesting
surpises during this transitional chart.

Firstly, we have an unprecedented (for this time of year)
5 re-entries into the top 50 by singles that were selling
strong in digital format but whose sales whithered on CD
single. Most notable is Eskimo Joe's "Black Fingernails,
Red Wine". It left the charts last week, now it re-enters
at number 23 thanks to the fact it is still the 11th most
downloaded digital track across the country. Panic At The
Disco's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" left the top 50
last month, but is now back in at number 26 thanks to its
healthy digital sales.

Then there's the interesting phenomenon of The Killers.
Their single, "When You Were Young", was last week's highest
new entry at number 17, in pre-merged chart days. Physical
sales of the single have declined now, in its second week
of charting, and if we follow the physical chart this week,
"When You Were Young" has dived 10 spots to number 27.
Digital downloads of that track, however, are on the increase,
resulting in the track being the 5th most downloaded single
across the nation. All this helps The Killers score
their first ever top 10 hit as "When You Were Young" bullets
from 17 to 10 on the merged chart, thus not only cancelling
out the decline in physical sales of their song, but
causing the single to strongly rise up the chart on download
sales. Had single formats not been merged, The Killers would
not be enjoying their biggest ever hit in Australia today.

Of course, some artists will be penalized by the merged chart
if their digital sales are not very healthy. Look at Robbie
Williams' "Rudebox". It slips from 23 to 26 on the physical
sales chart, but the fact it isn't even in the top 40 digital
chart sees the single dive from number 23 to 44 on the merged
chart due to the almost non-existant digital sales.

So let's compare this week's merged singles top 10 with its
physical and digital components.

MERGED TOP 10 = (physical position) + [digital position]

1. ( 1) + [3*] I WISH I WAS A PUNK ROCKER - Sandi Thom
2. ( 2) + [2] SEXYBACK - Justin Timberlake
3. ( 8) + [1] I DON'T FEEL LIKE DANCIN' - Scissor Sisters
4. ( 4) + [4] MANEATER - Nelly Furtado
5. ( 3) + [9] LONDON BRIDGE - Fergie
6. ( 6) + [6] U + UR HAND - Pink
7. ( 5) + [7] CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE SOBER - Evanescence
8. ( 7) + [33] TALLER, STRONGER, BETTER - Guy Sebastian *
9. ( 9) + [17] BUTTONS - The Pussycat Dolls featuring Snoop Dogg
10. (27) + [5] WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG - The Killers

* this song is also No. 10 on the digital chart as different mix

It's interesting how "Buttons" and "Taller, Stronger, Better"
remain somewhat stable in the merged chart despite their relatively
poor performance on the digital chart. However, it must be
remembered that charts rank songs amongst themselves (i.e. a
position reached on the chart does not correspond to a particular
quantity of sales) thus there may be quite a gap between this
week's number 7 and 8 singles or there may be very little
separating most of the digital tracks between number 10 and 40.

The Scissor Sisters enjoy the biggest downloaded track of the
week with "I Don't Feel Like Dancing", however they are penalized
by what's happened in shops, with the CD single slipping back to
number 8, resulting in an overall number 3 ranking for the song.

The dead-lock between Sandi Thom and Justin Timberlake is still
maintained with the new chart. Those singles haven't moved for
6 weeks. This is the longest period that the top 2 songs haven't
moved since 1999 which was when Britney Spears' "Baby One More
Time" and Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" occupied
the number one and two positions without moving for 7 weeks
in a row.

Now, onto the rest of week's first ever merged format singles chart.
There are 6 brand new entries, plus 5 re-entries. Had we been using
the physical singles chart as the official chart this week, the
number of re-entries would be just one, while there would have
only been 5 new hits.

6. U + UR HAND - Pink
CD singles chart: #6
Digital track chart: #6

Alecia Moore, better known as Pink, continues to churn out
big hits from her recent chart-topping "I'm Not Dead" album.
There was "Stupid Girls" which reached number 4 in March,
followed up by "Who Knew" which peaked at number 2 in July.
Now, Pink sets a new record for herself by scoring 3 top 10
singles from the one album. Her new release, "U + Ur Hand",
is this week's highest new entry at number 6.

21. BUT IT'S BETTER IF YOU DO - Panic! At the Disco
CD singles chart: #17
Digital track chart: #31

4-piece group from Las Vegas, Panic! At the Disco, almost
went unnoticed when they debuted at number 36 back in June
with the single "I Write Sins Not Tragedies". However,
they have enjoyed good success in Australia with that
single, now enjoying its 18th week in the top 50 after peaking
at number 12 and also scoring a gold selling album with
"A Fever You Can't Sweat Out". Panic! At the Disco have
been on tour in Australia which has helped their latest
single, "But It's Better If You Do", crash into the top 50
at number 21 this week.

24. (WHEN YOU GONNA) GIVE IT UP TO ME - Sean Paul
CD singles chart: #14
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)

Jamaican-born dancehall reggae star, Sean Paul, has enjoyed
moderate success with singles off his "Trinity" album. Not so
for the actual album itself. It was released last October,
but failed to make the top 50. A re-release of the album,
with a special bonus CD featuring collaborations with Rhianna
and Santana, also failed to make the top 50 when put on sale
back in June. Regardless of that, the album's second single
has so far been the biggest, with "Temperature" debuting
at number 19 back in June, and slowly climbing into the top 5
where it spent a couple of weeks. The third single from
"Trinity" is the track "Give It Up To Me" which enters this
week's chart at number 24, mainly thanks to CD singles as
the downloaded track didn't even made the top 40 digital chart.
"Give It Up To Me" went all the way to number 3 on the U.S.
Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

37. LOVE DON'T LET ME GO (WALKING AWAY) - David Guetta Vs. The Egg
CD singles chart: #34
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)

David Guetta is a 38 year-old DJ from Paris. Back in 2003,
he made his mark on several charts in Europe with the track
"Love Don't Let Me Go". David has taken his former hit
and mashed it up with the song "Walking Away" from British
electronic funk band, The Egg. The "Walking Away" song
achieved high exposure in Europe as it featured in the
commercial for the Citroen C4 car. The mashed up "Love Don't
Let Me Go (Walking Away)" subsequently went top 3 in the U.K.
a couple of months ago and this week enters the Australian
charts at number 37.

38. BIMBO NATION - TV Rock featuring Nancy Vice
CD singles chart: #20
Digital track chart: (not in top 40)

Melbourne producers and DJs, Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough,
recorded the track "Flaunt It" under the name of TV Rock
earlier this year. It was a phenomenanlly successful
single, spending 5 weeks at number one and 22 weeks in
the top 10, making it the third longest-running top 10 hit
in ARIA chart history, beaten only by he Prodigy's "Breathe"
and Guns n' Roses' "November Rain". The group's new single
is the dancefloor hit "Bimbo Nation" which features guest
vocals from Melbourne-based performer Nancy Vice. The
song title and associated lyrics have lead to some claiming
the song was written about model, singer, actress and
socialite Paris Hilton. "Bimbo Nation" enters the charts
at number 38 this week, clearly suffering from lack of digital
sales given that the CD single romped into the top 20.

45. EVERYBODY'S GONE TO WAR - Nerina Pallot
CD singles chart: (not in top 50)
Digital track chart: #37

This week's final new entry comes from English-born classically
trained pianist and multi-instrumentalist singer and songwriter,
Nerina Pallot. Her debut album, "Dear Frustrated Superstar",
was released in 2001, but failed to make much of an impact.
It was followed up in 2005 with the album "Fires" which she
self-funded, but soon after she signed with 14th Floor Records
which re-issued the album with some reworking of some of
the tracks. The re-issued album is out now and features
her single "Everybody's Gone To War". This single peaked
at number 14 in the U.K. and is this week's final new entry
at number 45 in Australia. Healthy digital sales of this
single have propelled this track into the top 50, and had
the digital and physical CD singles charts not been merged,
Nerina Pallot wouldn't have made the top 50 this week.

9. This week's feature song lyrics

------------------
U + UR HAND - Pink
------------------
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh
Check it out
Going out
On the late night
Looking tight
Feeling nice
It's a **** fight
I can tell
I just know
That it's going down
Tonight
At the door we don't wait cause we know them
At the bar six shots just beginning
That's when dick head put his hands on me
But you see

I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight

Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh
Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh

Midnight
I'm drunk
I don't give a ***k
Wanna dance
By myself
Guess you're outta luck
Don't touch
Back up
I'm not the one
Buh bye
Listen up it's just not happening
You can say what you want to your boyfriends
Just let me have my fun tonight
Aiight

I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight

Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh oh
Break break
Break it down

In the corner with your boys you bet up five bucks
To get at the girl that just walked in but she thinks you suck
We didn't get all dressed up just for you to see
So quit spilling your drinks on me yeah

You know who you are
High fivin, talkin ****, but you're going home alone arentcha?

Cause I'm not here for your entertainment
No
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight
It's just you and your hand

I'm not here for your entertainment
No no no
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
Just take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight
Yeah oh

-----------------------------------------------
BUT IT'S BETTER IF YOU DO - Panic! At the Disco
-----------------------------------------------
Now I'm of consenting age to be forgetting you in a cabaret.
Somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask my name
As she sheds her skin on stage
I'm seated and sweating to a dance song on the club's P.A.
The strip joint veteran sits two away
Smirking between dignified sips
of his dignified peach and lime daiquiri

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Oh, but I'm afraid that I
Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, that's right, well, I may have faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, that's right, well I may have faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Praying for love and paying in naivety
Praying for love and paying in naivety, oh

BIMBO NATION - TV Rock featuring Nancy Vice
-------------------------------------------
B.I.M.B.O.

B.I.M.B.O.
Oh no, oh ho
B.I.M.B.O.
Oh no, too slow

Bimbo head full of air
Blowing long hear
Got your tingle pop
Got your legs spread
Got your head red
Calling everybody are you in my bed yet
Touch your toes
Powder your nose
Credit-card flipping like a pancake, hot hot
Just a wink, a bit
A wiggle on my hips
Make the boys on the seat all sweat

Bimbo, talk that shit
Try to box this
Gotta wind her up
Look lost
What's the gloss
___ the slap at what cause
Oh yes she needs a man
All the bills can't do the math
Don't be fooled by the killer rock bitch
Blond bomb shell, she's a hell of a snitch

B.I.M.B.O.
Ultra, ego, folter, faker
B.I.M.B.O.
Headhunting the moneymaker
B.I.M.B.O
Glossy, glamour, glitter girl
B.I.M.B.O.
Princess of the bimbo-world

B.I.M.B.O.

Bimbo, time for tv-documentry (what does that mean?)
Colored your lips, silicon-tits
Only got time for the botox hit
Match your nails
Match your outfit
Looking so fine with your plastic shit
Just a wink, a bit
A wiggle on my hips
Make the boys on the seat all sweat

Bimbo loves to party
Give her every chance you'll get all tarty
She'd be rocking till the break of dawn
Everything is fun when your brain aint switched on
Gotta talk it slow for her (huh?)
Too much is way over (what?)
Her IQ is on vacation
You're just a part of the bimbo-nation

B.I.M.B.O.
Ultra, ego, folter, faker
B.I.M.B.O.
Headhunting the moneymaker
B.I.M.B.O
Glossy, glamour, glitter girl

EVERYBODY'S GONE TO WAR - Nerina Pallot
---------------------------------------
I've got a friend, he's a pure-bred killing machine
He says he's waited his whole damn life for this
I knew him well when he was seventeen
Now he's a man he'll be dead by Christmas

And so, everybody's going to war
But we don't know what we're fighting for
Don't tell me it's a worthy cause
No cause could be so worthy

If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober
If hope is a song, I guess it's all over
How to have faith, when faith is a crime?
I don't want to die
I'f God's on our side, then God is a joker
Asleep on the job, his children fall over
Running out through the door and straight to the sky
I don't want to die

For every man who wants to rule the world
There'll be a man who just wants to be free
What do we learn but what should not be learned?
Too late to find a cure for this disease

And so, everybody's going to war
But we don't know what we're fighting for
Don't tell me it's a worthy cause
No cause could be so worthy

If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober
If hope is a song, I guess it's all over
How to have faith, when faith is a crime?
I don't want to die
If God's on our side, then God is a joker
Asleep on the job, his children fall over
Running out through the door and straight to the sky
I don't want to die
I-I-I-I don't want to die
I-I don't want to die
