it was released in england on rough trade. seven tracks from
_hatful of hollow_ are on _louder than bombs_. i believe (not sure,
exactly) that the other smiths album not available in the u.s.
(and i don't remember it offhand) has most of the other songs from
_louder than bombs_. oh, it's got *8* tracks, not seven.

Two clues Donnie:
1) this is rec.music.misc
2) I've only seen the Smiths on MTV once around 1am

I believe that "Louder than Bombs" was just released in the U.S. to
`educate' the listeners here. Being mostly a compilation of singles that
I am assuming did well in England, I guess it made sense to release it
only in the U.S.

What difference does it make? It makes None... - The Smiths
I believe that "loder then bombs" is a compilation of the UK albums "The
World Won't listen" and "The smiths" (not the debut album). It also contains
"Please, please", which is from a film soundtrack. I think that it
is a US-only collection.
BTW the 24 tracks are great in random play......

"Louder Than Bombs" is a North American release; it's a combination of
"The World Won't Listen", a collection of loose singles released over
in Europe, with a "best of" collection of well-known songs off of the
studio albums (but none of the versions found on "A Hatful of Hollow",
an alternate take of the debut album using original singles versions).
>It also contains "Please, please", which is from a film soundtrack.
This cut was also on "A Hatful of Hollow".

*North America* only. I got my copy (2 records/1 CD) back in Canada. (-;

I don't like to contradict bob cuz he knows just about everything about
the smiths :-). However, _Louder than Bombs_ is a US double album release
that WAS NOT released in England. It was released by SIRE records under
license from Rough Trade (as were all the Smiths albums released in the US).
All the songs on _Louder Than Bombs_ are on the other two compilation
singles albums (if you haven't already figured it out, Morrissey liked
to release singles moreso than albums, thus they have three "compilation"
singles albums :-) ). Anyway, _Hatful of Hollow_ is the first compilation
album (not available in the US) and _World Won't Listen_ is the second
(also not available in the US). You can find these two albums at any
good import shop, but if you get _Louder than Bombs_, you won't be missing
anything. _World Won't Listen_ was released in the UK about a month after
(or was it before) _Louder Than Bombs_ was released in the US. Go
figure :-).
Hope that clears things up. There is a mailing list for the Smiths and
Morrissey called _Strangeways_ for discussing all this nifty trivia.
Email me if you're interested.

"Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was released as a
b-side of the single "William, It Was Really Nothing". Also on that
12-inch was "How Soon Is Now?", probably making it the most popular
Smiths single ever released. It was released in August 1984. I believe
"Please, Please" was used on a soundtrack ("Pretty In Pink" if memory
serves me correctly) and was re-done instrumentally on another soundtrack
(I don't remember who did the cover, though).
Hasta.

it was used on pretty in pink. the dream academy covered it,
in several formats. however, the film that it was featured in,
_ferris bueller's day off_, never had a soundtrack to it.
for more information on the soundtrack that should have been, ask lazlo.
he knows the music from the movie better than anyone except john hughes...

Actually, "Hatful" is the debut album with the original singles
replacing the rerecorded versions done for "The Smiths". Also,
there is one additional single not on "The Smiths". This album
was issued after dissatisfaction with the rerecordings by fans,
critics, and the band.
>but if you get _Louder than Bombs_, you won't be missing anything.
The versions on my Canadian LP have the studio rerecordings from
"The Smiths", not the original singles put on "Hatful".
"Hatful of Hollow" is just a compilation of their BBC shows and a couple
of singles. They _ARE_ different recordings than the singles (and IMHO,
much better). It actually has two songs which are not on any other album:
Handsome Devil and Accept Yourself. The recordings on "Hatful" are from
BBC Radio One John Peel Show (ie, the Peel Sessions) and BBC Radio One
David Jenson Show. The other songs are from the singles "Heaven Knows
I'm Miserable Now" "Hand In Glove" and "William It Was Really Nothing".

No, the songs on _Louder Than Bombs_ are the original singles. The
songs on _Hatful of Hollow_ are different studio sessions. The songs
on "The Smiths" are from a recording session but for the most part are
the original singles (the Smiths and Morrissey never make re-mixes of
their singles like some groups that put 10 mixes of the same song on
a single...the only exception I remember are the numerous "This Charming
Man" mixes, but they were all released as separate singles).
For those who like the Smiths, I strongly suggest a book called "the smiths:"
The Complete Story" by Mick Middles, which is a comprehensive look at the
various aspects of the Smiths from their simple beginnings to their
questionable demise.
Regarding the "Please, Please, Please" single, thanks for the info Bob.
I couldn't remember the name of the group that covered that single. Do
you know if it was ever released as a single by Dream Academy or was it
just on the movie soundtrack (I hate buying movie soundtracks for just
a couple of songs that I like :-) ).
Hasta.

Yes, but I've got both "Hatful of Hollow" and "The World Won't Listen" and
Golden Lights is not on either - mind you it's only really owrth listening to
for it's bizarreness.
Maybe you could have someone over here buy it and ship it to you, though
after dealing with IRC's and currency and taxes that road might not be any
cheaper.

It was the A-side of a Dream Academy 12" (includes an instrumental and a
vocal version of the song along with "Edge of Forever" and an acoustic version
of "The Party"). There's a grainy photo on the cover with (in script) "Please
Please Please" across the top in white.
Yeah, the truth is it is only available in the US. Because Hatful of Hollow was
never released in the US, and neither was The World Won't Listen, Sire records
culled things from both discs that hadn't been released yet and a few other
odds and ends as well and came up with Louder Than Bombs. Save your money cuz
if you have those two it's not really vital: the Louder Than Bombs version of Back to the Old
House gets blown away by Hatful's version, for instance.
