2. T H E Y E A R T H A T W A S

2006 was a big year in terms of changes to how the music charts
work due to the ever increasing sales of digital music, and 2007
was no different. But firsty, let's recap on what happened in
2006.

In January 2006, the official start of the "chart week" was
changed from Sunday to Saturday so that the busiest day of sales,
that being Saturday, would occur at the start of the chart
week (not at the end) and thus new music would typically be
released on this busy day to maximize sales potential.
April 2006 saw the first release of a digital track chart,
covering sales from online music providers. And in October
2006, the official singles chart incorporated both CD
single and digital track sales, driven by the fact that
by then, digital sales had reached roughly up to 30% of a
single's total sales.

2007 now marks the first complete year in which digital track
sales have been part of the official singles chart. However,
we began to see some strange occurences. When first introduced,
the combined CD singles and digital track chart came with
many eligibility rules, the most significant being that a
single could not chart only on digital sales. The CD version
of that single must be released before digital sales can
be merged with and appear on the chart. The aim there was to
ensure that the merged chart didn't get infiltrated by album-only
tracks or songs you couldn't buy at your local record store.
But it had significant drawbacks. In the 2006, British rock
group, Snow Patrol, had a number one song on the digital track
chart in late 2006 with "Chasing Cars", but because it wasn't
released as a CD single, it was ineligible to be included on the
official singles chart. In 2007, many artists suffered reduced
chart success simply because any digital sales of their singles
were effectively discarded until the week when their CD single
hit the shops. Particularly effected by this was Newcastle rock
band, Silverchair. Their single, "Straight Lines", spent 4 weeks
at number one when released as a CD single in March 2007, however
for 3 straight weeks prior to its physical release, "Straight
Lines" topped the digital track chart. Those extra three weeks
at number one were ineligible to be credited to them on the
official singles chart.

In the end, it all came down to what was a single. Is a single
defined as the physical medium it resides on, or does it
consist of just a song, no matter what format it is sold as?

In response to this, November 2007 saw a complete overhaul as
to how digital tracks were incorporated into the singles chart.
No longer did a single need to be on sale in CD single format
before it could begin charting. As soon as it was released for
digital sale, it could begin charting, regardless of whether a
CD single will go on sale later on or in fact never. So for
the last two months of 2007, the combined singles chart ranked
the most popular songs people were buying, irrespective of the
format.

November 2007 also saw the publication of a merged albums chart
which incorporated digital album sales, although the effect on
that chart is minimal due to the relative low volume of complete
album sales in digital format.

So what effect have the new chart arrangements had on the singles
chart in 2007?

The most noticeable change was the average chart run of singles.
No longer are consumers locked into purchasing a single only
during the few months it is available for sale. With that
arrangement, if they missed out on or only warmed to a song
after it finished its chart run, they would be forced to buy
the corresponding album for a much greater cost, assuming that
single was available on an album. Music consumers now have
a much wider choice, with digital tracks effectively remaining
on sale indefinitely as they don't occupy valuable display
space like in music shops nor is there any ongoing costs to
print covers and packaging. To illustrate how consumers
are embracing this, consider 2005 when no single spent more
than 30 weeks in the top 50. In 2006, 4 singles spent
30 or more weeks in the top 50, and now, in 2007, the first
complete chart year of digital sales tracking, we have had
14 singles clock up more than 30 weeks in the chart. In terms
of chart achievements, it is of course unfair to compare
what is happening now with previous years. Those 14 super
long running singles of 2007 would have no doubt had a much
shorter chart life had digital sales not been taken into
account.

So have digital sales increased much over the last year? We
rounded up 2006 with a rough figure of 30% of a song's sales
being digital, with CD single sales from record stores still
being the major influence on the chart. In 2007, this has
been turned around, to such an extreme that would stun most
people. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, over 60% of the
sales of singles were digital versions, leaving the CD single
market in the same position that digital sales were 12 months
ago - that is, with a market share of around 30%. With people
embracing digital music players around Christmas time, we
reached an incredible situation just before Christmas when
almost 85% of music sales of the singles in the top 40 were
digital. CD singles are declining rapidly in sales, but the
increase in digital purchases has exceeded this decline, which
is good news for the music industry. So it's not just people
switching format from CD single to digital track, but people are
actually now buying more music, no doubt influenced by the fact
that digital tracks can be conveniently purchased at home and are
immediately delivered, and also their significantly less cost
than the CD single equivalent is attractive. For those who
thought no one would buy digital music because of the
proliferation of illegal file sharing services on the internet,
they have been proved wrong. If buying music over the internet
is simple, very cheap and covers what people want to buy, many
people will simply not bother trying to save $1.50 by hunting
around on the internet trying to find ways to get the song they
want for free.

One artist who has been enjoying the digital sales revolution is
American producer and rapper, Timbaland. With his music of
great appeal to the generation that is savvy of the internet
and digital music players, his current chart-topping single
"Apologize" is averaging 85% digital sales compared to 15%
CD single sales at the start of 2008. And thanks to the
new chart rules, he enjoyed three weeks of strong top 10 chart
success on digital sales only, before "Apologize" appeared in
record shops for sale. Timbaland capped off a mammoth year on
the Australian charts, claiming the number one spot on both
the last singles and albums chart of 2007. The "Apologize"
single notched up a 6th week at number one while his "Shock
Value" album finally reached the number one spot after 22
charting weeks.

Silverchair are also loving the digital revolution. Their
number one single, "Straight Lines", spent its 38th week
in the top 50 in the last chart of 2007, almost purely
on digital sales.

There have been some chart come-backs for previously successful
artists in 2007. British boy band Take That reformed in a
similar fashion to what the Backstreet Boys did in 2005 after
each member's solo career fizzled out. Take That's single, the
ballad "Patience", was a chart-topper in the UK but only reached
number 29 here in Australia. Robbie Williams was absent from the
group, with his solo career being the only one that was still
going strong. And despite Take That enjoying more big hits in
the UK, including the pop anthem "Shine" which also went to
number one but failed to make an impact here, their come-back in
Australia passed mainly unnoticed.

Another British pop group that reunited in 2007 was the
Spice Girls. They took the world by storm in 1996 and their
debut single "Wannabe" occupied the number one spot for an
incredible 11 weeks. The 5 girls churned out hit after hit,
a total of 8 top 10 singles in just 4 years, 3 albums plus the
movie "Spice World". Geri Halliwell left the group in mid-1998
and by 2001, after poor sales of their third album, the girls
decided to take a break. Each of the girls had an impact on the
Australian charts as a solo artist, with Geri Hawiwell and
Melanie C being the most successful here. In mid-2007, the
girls announced they were re-uniting and commencing a world
concert tour. Despite huge ticket sales and a very successful
concert series which is still going, their comeback single
"Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" didn't even make the top 50
in Australia and became their lowest selling single in the UK
when it peaked at just number 11. However, their "Greatest Hits"
album, which they released in November became their first album
to top the albums charts in Australia and it sold platinum,
ending up as the 36th highest selling album here in 2007.

The much touted come back of Melbourne girl, Vanessa Amorosi,
didn't live up to expectations. In 2000, she was at the peak
of her career, with widely acclaimed performances at the
Sydney Olympic Games ensuring she was a household name around
the world with international hits such as "Absolutely Everybody"
and "Shine". Her second album in 2001 was a major sales failure
and her third album, scheduled for release in 2002 was postponed
indefinitely due to poor single sales. In September this year
she released the single "Kiss Your Mama!" which gained her great
radio airplay, but it only spent one week in the top 20 when it
debuted at number 15. Her new album is her fourth and it's
titled "Somewhere In The Real World" but it also has had its
release postponed.

The Australian Idol series continued to have an impact on the
charts in 2007, but mainly from previously established
contestants rather than new people. 2003's runner-up,
Shannon Noll, managed to score two top 3 singles in 2007
with "Don't Give Up" (duet with Natalie Bassingthwaighte) and
"Loud". He also scored a platinum selling album with his
third release, "Turn It Up". The person who beat Shannon
in Idol 2003 was Guy Sebastian, who didn't manage to have any
top 10 singles in 2007 but did manage a platinum seller
with "The Memphis Album" which covered soul classics.

2004's Idol runner-up, Anthony Callea, released his second album
very late in 2006 titled "A New Chapter". Despite notching up
three top 5 hits including two number ones from his first
album, the new album gave him a number 9 hit over Christmas
2006 with "Live For Love" and the album's second single,
"Addicted To You" peaked at number 19 in February 2007.

One Australian Idol artist that was not in decline in 2007
was Ricki-Lee. After finishing the 2004 Idol series at
number 7, she enjoyed two top 10 hit singles in 2005 -
"Hell No!" and "Sunshine". As part of the Young Divas
group in 2006 she enjoyed a double-platinum selling album
and two top 10 hits. She left Young Divas in 2007 to
return to her solo career, earning chart success that
exceeded her previous achievements. Her single "Can't Touch
It" went to number 2 in August 2007, while the follow-up,
"Love Is All Around", was a top 5 smash.

Winner of the 2006 Idol series, Damien Leith, was unable to
emulate the success of his number one single, "Night Of My
Life", from last year. "22 Steps" was the first single
from his second album and it only peaked at number 11 in August.
However his second album, "Where We Land", did go to number
one and ended up as the 39th highest selling album of 2007.
2006's runner-up, Jessica Mauboy, debuted at number 4 in
March with her album of songs she performed during the
Idol series, but it spent just 6 weeks in the top 50
and failed to make the end of year top 100. And third
placed Dean Geyer managed to just make it to number 10 for
one week in June with the single "If You Don't Mean It".
He's now got a role on the TV soap "Neighbours", possibly
hoping to ignite renewed interest in this music through that.

The 2007 Idol series produced the most unsuccessful winner
ever. TV ratings were down and so was general interest in
the series and music. The eventual winner, 26 year-old
Melbourne girl Natalie Gauci, became the first Idol winner not
to go to number one with her debut single. "Here I Am" peaked
at number 2 and spent just 4 weeks in the top 10. She released
her album "The Winner's Journey" in mid-December, but it became
the lowest charting album of an Idol winner, unable to go top 10.
In 2008 we'll see whether Idol runner-up Matt Corby or third
place getter Carl Riseley will have much success. Recent
history dictates they will not.

If there are two female artists that have dominated the charts
in late 2006 and following on into 2007, they are Pink and
Fergie. Both artists capped off 2007 by scoring an incredible
five top 5 hit singles off their current albums. Pink's
album "I'm Not Dead" was incredibly the second highest selling
album of both 2006 and 2007, ending the year with 8-times
platinum sales. Helping her to massive single and album sales
was a huge concert tour here which saw her do an incredible
35 shows and thus perform to over 300,000 people.

After hitting number 3 in late 2006 with her first solo single,
Black Eyed Peas female vocalist Fergie sent another 4 singles
into the top 5 during 2007 including the ballad "Big Girls
Don't Cry" which ended up as the highest selling single of
2007 in Australia. Her album "The Dutchess" was a triple
platinum seller and the fifth biggest selling album of 2007.

Identical twins from Brisbane, Jess and Lisa Origliasso, who
go by the name of The Veronicas, continued to capitalise on
their success in 2007. Despite not breaking into the American
market as we were lead to believe was supposed to happen last
year, the girls are enjoying more success than ever at home
in Australia. During 2005 and 2006, their debut album "The
Secret Life Of The Veronicas" went 4 times platinum and
gave them 3 top 10 hits, with the highest being the number
2 song "4Ever". In November 2007, their "Hook Me Up" album was
released, going platinum and finally giving them their first
ever number one hit single with the title track. The album's
second single, "Untouched", ended the 2007 chart year at number
2 on the weekly chart, thus giving the girls two top 2 hits in
a row for the first time.

Also enjoying solid success in 2007 was Barbados-born Rihanna.
2006 saw her score a massive number one with the 8 week running
"SOS". She didn't disappoint in 2007 when she teamed up with
rapper Jay-Z on "Umbrella" which spent 6 weeks at number one and
actually ended up being her most successful hit yet by being
the third highest selling single of 2007.

The female artist domination of 2007 continued with Avril
Lavigne. Suffering a drop in success after her debut
album "Let Go" in 2002, Avril stormed into 2007 with a
killer single titled "Girlfriend". It clocked up 6 weeks at
number one and ended up as the second highest selling single
of 2007 - officially her best achievement yet. Her album
"The Best Damn Thing" was a solid performer, clocking up
double-platinum sales. A remix of "Girlfriend" with guest
vocals supplied by 18 year-old Lil Mama (complete with a brand
new music video) featured as a bonus track on Avril's second
single of 2007, "When You're Gone", which went top 5.

In 2007, Kylie Minogue bounced back with her first single and
album after her diagnosis of breast cancer back in mid-2005.
"2 Hearts" topped the singles chart here in November and it
went to number 4 in the UK and top 10 through much of Europe.
Kylie's 10th studio album, denoted by the roman numeral "X",
went to number one at the start of December and sold platinum
during the busy Christmas period. 2007 marks the 8th year in
a row that Kylie had had an album in the top 100's sellers
list for the year. And some of those albums just wouldn't
go away, like "Fever" which was the 5th biggest selling album
of 2001, the 4th biggest of 2002 and the 57th of 2003.

In 2007, the slow-down of chart activity that we first
experienced in 2006 continued. Singles spent much longer in
the charts on average, thanks to digital sales allowing the
public to buy when they wanted, not just during the few months
the single was on sale at music shops. Allowing singles to
chart on digital sales only, in advance of CD single release,
resulted in some slower climbs to the top. Timbaland's
"Apologize" debuted at number 10 on digital sales in
early November, climbing each week until the CD single hit
the shops, giving it a boost to propell it to number one.
Alicia Keys' "No One" also followed a similar pattern,
debuting almost unnoticed at number 37 on digital sales
alone, but the CD single arriving in stores saw it leap 23
places up the chart in the following week.

However, the days of a single's debut position being its highest
look like being well over. Back in 2005, an incredible 73% of
singles that first charted that year peaked at their debut
position. In 2006, this dropped back down to 58% and it has
dropped even further, down to just 55% in 2007. This is best
illustrated by comparing how many high flying debuts we have
had each year.

Shown below is how many Australian singles have made various
parts of the end of year top 100 singles chart over the last few
years.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It looks like we are going backwards. 2006 saw an unprecedented
level of success whereby 40% of the 10 biggest sellers of the
year were from Australian artists. While in 2007 we have a
similar quantity to 2006 of Australian content in the top 100
of the year's biggest sellers, most of those have fallen
outside of the top 50. In 2006, 15 of the year's 50 biggest
sellers were from local acts, but this is now almost halved to
just 8 singles in 2007.

2007 continues on as the second year in a row that the year's
biggest selling single doesn't belong to a local artist. Thanks
to Australian Idol, the nation's highest selling single in 2003,
2004 and 2005 belonged to Idol winners or runner-ups. 2006's
Idol winner, Damien Leith, only managed to score the nation's
11th biggest single for that year with "Night Of My Life".
It's even worse in 2007 with this year's Idol winner, Natalie
Gauci, bombing out at a disappointing number 71 on the year
end chart with "Here I Am".

Let's take a look at how many Australian singles actually made
the top 50 weekly singles chart during this year and previous
years.

2005 99
2006 88
2007 69
--------------------------------------
NOTE: each single is counted once only
in the first year it charted

We are going backwards again, not only with the success of
Australian singles in 2007, but also quite fundamentally in the
number of them that are making the top 50 singles chart each
week. Although, in all fairness, the total number of different
singles that have made the weekly charts is significantly down
on 2006 due to increased longevity of many of the singles, thus
you would expect the number of local recordings making the chart
to have also been pruned accordingly.

Australian Idol has had a much diminished impact on this year's
chart. Back in 2006, there were 24 Australian artist singles
in the end of year top 100, and 10 of those came from Australian
Idol contestants. In 2007, just 5 of the 25 Australian artists
in the end of year top 100 are connected to Idol. Ricki-Lee,
from the 2004 Idol series, has enjoyed a return to form with
her second solo album churning out the number 2 hit "Can't
Touch It" which ended up as the highest selling Australian
Idol single in 2007, finishing up at number 28 on the end of
year chart. Next was 2003's runner-up, Shannon Noll, with
two hits making the end of year top 100 - "Don't Give Up"
with Natalie Bassingthwaighte and the solo hit "Loud". 2007's
winner, Natalie Gauci, came in at just number 71 for the year
with "Here I Am", the first Idol winner not to go to number one
with her first single. And at number 88 for 2007 was Dean Geyer,
the third placed finalist from the 2006 series with "If You Don't
Mean It" which managed to spend just one week in the top 10 chart
back in June.

How did Australian artists do on the international charts in
2007?

It's actually been a quiet year on the international music
scene for Australian artists. Kylie Minogue and Natalie
Imbruglia continued to spearhead Australian pop music around
the world, particularly in Europe. However, the international
success rock groups such as The Vines, Wolfmother and Jet
enjoyed in 2006 is virtually non-existant in 2007.

Finland's love of Australian dance music continued on in
2007. While 2006 saw TV Rock and Vandalism take on their
charts, 2007 saw Slinkee Minx go top 20 over there with
their single "Way Of Life".

Ireland continues to be an interesting market for Australian
Idol contestants. From October 2004 to March 2005, Shannon
Noll's "What About Me" was a massive hit, spending months
in the top 10 and peaking at number 2. The winner of the
2006 Idol series, Damien Leith, scored a top 10 hit in Ireland
with "Night Of My Life", but it wasn't too much of a surprise
the Irish market was targetted given that Damien was born
there and enjoyed minor musical success there before immigrating
to Australia.

And lastly Keith Urban continued to be a solid contributor to the
American music charts.

Below is a list showing which Australian artists scored singles
chart success in which country during 2007. Note that the list
below is far from exhaustive, and thus it simply represents the
presence of Australian singles on charts across the world that
I have personally come across. The real list is must larger,
but this gives one a taste of some of the overseas success
that our local artists have been enjoying.

6 weeks: GIRLFRIEND - Avril Lavigne

1 week: IN THIS LIFE - Delta Goodrem *
1 week: HOOK ME UP - The Veronicas *
1 week: 2 HEARTS - Kylie Minogue *
--------------------------------------------------------------
[note 1]: "IRREPLACEABLE" by Beyonce spent a total of 3 weeks
at number one, however becaise it spent one week at
number one during the 2006 chart year, only 2 weeks
of its time at number one occurred during 2007.

[note 2]: "APOLOGIZE" by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic
continued on as the number one single for the first
issued chart of 2008, but only 6 weeks of its
current stay at number one occurred during 2007.

A total of 14 different singles went to number one in 2007,
including one single that carried over from 2006, resulting
in an average stay at the top of 3.7 weeks. It's a slight
drop from the 4.1 week average for number one hits in 2006,
but a far cry from 2005 when the top spot was much more evenly
shared around with 22 singles going to number one, averaging
just 2.4 weeks each at the top.

For the second year in a row, the song that spent the most weeks
at number one ended up as the year's biggest seller overall.

2007 saw a bit of a swing back to the days of many songs spending
just one week at the top. This year saw 5 singles spend a week
at number one, co-incidentally all by local artists. Local
exposure and hype may have resulted in a short but concentrated
buying period which gave those singles enough sales to reach
number one. In 2006, just two singles spent only a week
at number one, but back in 2005, we had 7.

Six out of the 14 number one hits in 2007 were by Australian
or New Zealand acts. However, with 5 of those 6 local
hits spending just a week at number one, the total number
of weeks spent at number one by local artists was just 9
weeks. Compare this to 2006 when only 4 Aussie hits
reached the top, but their combined weeks at the summit
reached a very impressive 15 week total.

Of those 14 singles that enjoyed time at number one in 2007,
8 debuted at number one. This is similar to 2006 when 7
of the year's chart toppers debuted at the top. But things
were dramatically different in 2005 when 80% or 18 of the 22
number one singles debuted at the top.

Two of the 14 number one singles of 2007 returned to the top
of the chart after vacating that position for at least a week.
In April, Avril Lavigne's "Girlfiend" spent a week at the top,
but was displaced by Missy Higgings when she debuted at number
one in the following week with "Steer". That single dived
to number 5 the week after, allowing Avril to reclaim the number
one spot and hold it for the next 5 weeks. Sean Kingston's
"Beautiful Girls" suffered a similar fate, being displaced
by a high profile Australian hit that debuted at the top.
In Sean's case, he had to step back for a week as Delta Goodrem
debuted at number one with "In This Life", but he quickly
reclaimed the top spot, holding firm there for another 4 weeks.

While in 2006 no artist managed to score more than one number
one single, Timbaland managed to reverse this trend with two
chart-topping hits in 2007. First there was his collaboration
with Keri Hilson on "The Way I Are" which spent two weeks at
number one, and then after a two week absence from the top,
Timbaland was back with "Apologize". Although you wouldn't
really know it was a Timbaland song as his contribution to that
track was effectively just remixing the music of the original
vocal arrangement by American rock group OneRepublic.

5. T H E L O N G E S T R U N N I N G S I N G L E S

The list below shows singles which have been in the 2007
top 50 chart for 30 or more weeks. If the single was in the
chart prior to the beginning of 2007, then weeks spent in the
charts of previous years is also included to give a full picture
of the single's charting life-span rather than imposing
artificial boundaries of charting success at the beginning and
end of years.

Note that this list has changed from previous years! In the
past, we regarded long-running singles as those spending 20
or more weeks in the top 50. This would have resulted in
64 singles being listed for 2007 - more than double the number
of 2006 or 4 times that of 2005. With the nature of the singles
chart leaning towards long running singles, the definition of
what is a long running single has now changed to 30 or more weeks
in the top 50.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

(-) These singles were charting prior to 2006 and also charted
into 2007.

(+) These singles featured in the last chart of 2007 and may
go on to chart into 2008.

14 singles that had at least some of their top 50 charting
history during 2007 spent 30 or more weeks in the singles chart.
Compare this to 2006 when just 4 singles achieved that feat.
And in 2005, no singles spent 30 or more weeks in the top 50.

2007 will definitely go down in history as continuing the major
reversal of the trend previously experienced earlier this
decade of fast moving charts with chart stays exceeding 20 weeks
being a rarity. This is illustrated by examining the 10 longest
running singles in ARIA chart history.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
47 weeks - 1998/9: SECOND SOLUTION / PRISONER OF SOCIETY
- The Living End *
42 weeks - 2006/7: BLACK FINGERNAILS, RED WINE - Eskimo Joe *

37 weeks - 1997/8: IT'S LIKE THAT - Run DMC Vs. Jason Nevins
-----------------------------------------------------------------

As seen above, 6 of the 10 longest running top 50 singles in
ARIA chart history charted in either 2006 or 2007.

7. T H E T O P 1 0 0 S I N G L E S

In 2006, the artist with the most entries in the year's
top 100 biggest sellers list was Nicole Scherzinger, the
primary vocalist in the award-winning group The Pussycat Dolls.
Four of those singles were with her group and one was a
collaboration with P. Diddy.

Now, in 2007, Nicole has absolutely no entries in the end
of year chart despite her success last year. Taking over from
Nicole is Justin Timberlake with an incredible 6 entries
into the year's 100 biggest list. In all fairness, two
of those entries are due to his minor role as a feature
artist on singles by Timbaland and 50 Cent, and the highest
any of his 6 contributions got to on the end of year chart
was only number 31 with "What Goes Around...Comes Around".

Next down the list comes Fergie and Akon, each with 4 entries
in the top 100 singles of 2007. Fergie is a stand out
performer, with all her 4 contributions being as the primary
recording artist. And those 4 singles were big, especially
the ballad "Big Girls Don't Cry", which outsold every other
single in 2007 to become the nation's highest seller. At
number 13 on the end of year chart was "Glamerous", while
"Fergalicious" came in at number 38 and "Clumsy", which was
still selling stringly and in the top 5 at the end of 2007,
came in at number 52 for the year. Like Fergie, Akon also
scored 4 hits into the end of year top 100, however one of
those was as a minor contributer to Gwen Stefani's huge
single, "The Sweet Escape", which was the 9th biggest seller
of 2007.

Following Akon and Fergie are 7 artists or groups with three
singles within the year's top 100 and another 15 who put
two singles into the end of year chart. The number of high
profile artists collaborating with each other during the
last few years is the reason multiple hits for the one artist
in the end of year singles chart is so common these days.

All artists with two or more singles within the top 100 for the
year are listed below.

The chart below is based on single sales from Saturday 6th
January 2007 (chart dated 8-14/1/2007) to Friday 28th December
2007 (chart dated 31/12/2007 - 6/1/2008).

For singles whose charting run extended back before 2007, only
sales for the 2007 chart year are included when ranking them.

Note that the weeks in the chart and highest position listed for
each single below is taken up until the last chart of the 2007
chart year which is dated 31/12/2007 - 6/1/2008. The statistics
do however include success the single may have also had in
years prior to 2007.

A minus sign, "-", preceding a single's title indicates that the
single spent some of its top 50 charting life prior to 2007.
A plus sign, "+", means that the single featured in the last
top 50 chart of the 2007 chart year and thus it may or may not
continue to chart into 2008.

In 2006, Australian artists dominated the albums chart,
particularly at the higher end where the big sales were had.
So great was this dominance that 7 of the 10 biggest selling
albums of 2006 were from Australian artists, and this set a
brand new chart record.

As expected, this record-breaking dominance of Australian
artists couldn't be sustained, but the results are still
impressive anyway. Four of the year's 10 biggest selling
albums are from local artists, spearheaded by Missy Higgins
whose triple-platinum selling "On A Clear Night" was only
outsold by three other albums in 2007.

While 2006 set a record for the most Australian acts in
the top 10 end of year chart, 2007 does actually end up
as a record-breaker in another sense. 2007 sees 37
of the 100 biggest selling album come from local artists,
which is the highest number ever in ARIA chart history.

2007's biggest selling album belongs to 32 year-old Canadian
crooner, Michael Buble. The album "Call Me Irresponsible"
clocked up 34 weeks in the top 50, with 22 of those weeks being
spent in the top 10. The album debuted at number one just
in time for Mother's Day and now, almost 8 months later,
it is still in the top 10 after enjoying a total of 5
weeks at number one. Only one single from the album made
the top 10 singles chart, that being the track "Everything",
which peaked only at number 19, but did enjoy almost a
5 month chart run.

The second biggest selling album of 2007 only spent one week
at number one this year. However, it notched up a total of
87 weeks in the top 50, spread across both 2006 and 2007.
The album in question is Pink's "I'm Not Dead" and it sold
5-times platinum during 2006 and added another 3-times
platinum sales in 2007. Interestingly enough, "I'm Not
Dead" was also the second biggest selling album of 2006
which clearly illustrates its chart dominance across
two full years. However, unlike Michael Buble's "Call Me
Irresponsible", "I'm Not Dead" was a gold-mine of singles,
6 in total, with 5 of them going top 5 in a spectacular
chart achievement for 28 year-old Alicia Moore.

The third highest selling album of the year is from Justin
Timberlake. The 26 year-old was the lead singer of the former
pop boy band 'N Sync has enjoyed spectacular chart achievements
since launching his solo career in late 2002. Since then
he has had 4 number one singles (2 of which were as a feature
artist), a triple-platinum selling debut solo album with
"Justified" and now his second solo album has sold 4-times
platinum, making "Future Sex/Love Sounds" the third biggest
album of the year in Australia. Surprisingly enough, it is
the only album in the year's top 10 sellers chart not to have
gone to number one. It only peaked at number 4 but having
spent almost 6 months in the top 10 ensured it accumulated
enough sales to outsell most of the year's released.

Melbourne's Missy Higgins had the biggest selling album of
2005 with the now 9-times platinum "The Sound Of White".
She followed her debut album up with "On A Clear Night"
which debuted at number one back in May and notched
up 3-times platinum sales, giving her the fourth biggest
seller of the year.

The fifth biggest seller of 2007 belongs to Fergie. Stepping
out of the highly-successful Black Eyed Peas for a tilt at
a solo career, she released 5 CD singles which all went top 5
during late 2006 and into 2007. All those songs were released
off her "The Dutchess" album which spent 4 weeks at number one
in August and went triple-platinum. She has easily eclipsed the
solo chart career of fellow band member Will.I.Am.

A total of 25 different albums went to number one during the
52 charting weeks of 2006 making the average stay at number
one of 2.1 weeks. The longest running number one album was
by American rock group The Eagles. "Long Road Out Of Eden"
is their first studio album in 28 years and it spent a
total of 6 weeks at the top.

Below are two lists showing all the albums that went to number
one during 2007. The first list (a) shows each week's number one
album, while the second list (b) shows a summary of how long each
album that went to number one spent at the top of the chart.

The weeks all add up to 52 which was the total number of charts
in the 2007 chart year.

--------------------------------------------------------------

[note 1]: "THE WINNER'S JOURNEY" by Damien Leith spent a total
of 5 weeks at number one, however 3 of those weeks
occurred during 2006, so only 2 weeks of its time at
number one occurred during 2007.

[note 2]: "I'M NOT DEAD" by Pink spent a total of 2 weeks at
number one, however one of those weeks occurred
during 2006, so only one week of its time at number
one occurred during 2007.

[note 3]: "TIMBALAND PRESENTS: SHOCK VALUE" by Timbaland
continued on as the number one album for the first
chart issued in 2008, but only one week of its stay
at number one occurred during the 2007 chart year.

In 2006, both Il Divo and Robbie Williams each scored 3 of the
year's top 100 selling albums, however in 2007 no artist managed
to achieve that feat. However, 7 artists did manage to score
two entries in this year's top 100 albums chart as compared
to 9 the year before. So with less dominance of the albums
chart by a core group of high selling artists, the albums
chart of 2007 allowed more opportunity for other acts to
make it into the year's biggest sellers list.

All artists with two or more albums within the top 100 for 2007
are listed below, excluding movie soundtracks or "various"
artists.

sales for the 2007 chart year are included when ranking them.

205 different singles made their first appearance in the top 50
weekly singles chart during 2007. We also had 56 singles that
first charted in 2006 and continued to appear in some of the
weekly charts of 2007. Combined, this makes a grand total of
261 different singles that charted during the 52 charting weeks
of 2007. Let's compare how this year compares to previous years
for the quantity of singles making the top 50 weekly charts.

* As I don't have weekly top 50 singles charts for 1988, only
the total number of unique charting singles is calculated for
1989, since without the 1988 charts, we cannot identify which
singles from 1989 first charted in 1988.

In summary, the total number of charting singles continues to
drop. Between 2002 and 2005, this number remained fairly static,
but 2006 saw a big drop and 2007 sees an even larger drop,
returning the chart to what it was like in the late 1990s.
The primary reason this has occured is that with the full impact
of digital sales governing the charts in 2007, singles are
hanging around much longer in the chart. This means that there's
less opportunity for new music to penetrate the top 50.

Below is listed every one of the 261 singles that spent any time
at all in the top 50 weekly singles chart during the 2007 chart
year, in alphabetical order of the artist or group name. Highest
position, peak position and weeks in the top 50 also include (if
applicable) chart achievements prior to 2007. This gives a full
picture of the single's charting life-span rather than imposing
artificial boundaries of charting success at the beginning and
end of years. Note that the chart positions listed do not
illustrate incidents of when a single leaves the top 50 and
re-enters at some later stage. It is just a list of chart
positions occupied, in chronological order, from the first to the
last week the single charted.

No statistics are provided for the singles past the last charting
week of 2007 (the chart dated 31/12/2007 - 06/01/2008), thus the
chart run of those singles is incomplete until they leave the
chart in the future. Singles with incomplete chart runs as
marked as "still charting", although some of those singles may
actually be at the end of their chart run if they havent't
appeared in the first new chart of the 2008 charting year. Some
of those singles that do actually appear to have a finished chart
run may end up re-appearing in 2008's charts during the quiet
release period in January.
