Geoff Downes/The World Service - Geoff Downes is the keyboard maestro
for The Buggles,Yes and the multi - platinum supergroup Asia. This is
a brand new studio album, recorded in 1999 at the Asia recording studio
in Wales. This is his first solo project for over five years inspired
by tuning into BBC World Service when he was a young boy. Geoff
describes the album as a "travelogue of music", with the blend of
classic and rock keyboard styles creating sound scapes of distant
lands and cultures. Geoff also offers instructions for PC and Sony
Playstation use, enabling the listener to enjoy a unique journey
around the World travelling through space and time.
Ovary Lodge/Ovary Lodge - For over twenty years Keith Tippett has been
at the forefront of contemporary European Jazz and new music as a solo
pianist, composer, bandleader, band member and musical educator. This
recording was originally released in 1973 and followed Tippet's
critically acclaimed Centipede project, which featured leading members
of the English Jazz and Rock scene of the early '70's. Ovary Lodge is
a totally improvised recording, featuring Keith Tippett on piano and
zither. Roy Babbington is on Bass and Frank Perry on percussion.
Production is by Robert Fripp.
Tim Blake/Crystal Machine - Keyboard player Tim Blake first met
various members of Group X (later Hawkwind), at drama school in the
late '60's. Tim then moved to France to join Gong, initially as a
sound engineer, and then as a member of the band. Tim Blake's
innovative synthesizer and keyboard playing became an integral part of
the Gong sound and he featured on three of their most popular albums;
Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, and You. After leaving Gong, Tim formed
Crystal Machine, which was a highly elaborate set up of banks of
synthesizers and electronic gadgetry combined with stunning laser and
lighting effects. Two pioneering albums were recorded and released on
the Egg label in the late '70's. These were Crystal Machine and New
Jerusalem, and they received high critical acclaim with chart status
on the continent. Tim then became a member of Hawkwind for the Live
'79 and Levitation albums, before returning to France to work on solo
projects.
David Hughes/Shouting At The Radio - Taken from his acclaimed album,
'This Other Eden', acoustic guitarist and songwriter, David Hughes
releases his debut single. The track features Dave Mattacks on drums
with acoustic divas, Eddi Reader and Jacqui McShee on backing vocals.
Brit award winner, Eddi Reader, also features on 'Its Hard To Imagine'
where she duets with Hughes. Backing is provided by an elite trio
namely; Danny Thompson on Bass, Spencer Cozens on keyboards and Gerry
Conway on drums. Folk Roots in their January issue called Hughes,"one
of the country's most witty, able writers."
Michael Chapman/The Twisted Road - Michael Chapman, singer, musician
and songwriter emerged from the thriving British Folk Club scene in
the sixties, alongside John Martyn, Al Stewart, Bert Jansch and Roy
Harper. The British Folk Club scene led Michael to a contract with
Harvest Records, where his albums juxtaposed, solo performances,
guitar instrumentals with rock songs. His band included Rick Kemp
(Steeleye Span), and Mick Ronson (David Bowie). Michael Chapman's
best known record from this period is Fully Qualified Survivor, which
found a place in the U.K. Chart in 1970. After several more albums for
Harvest Records, he signed to Deram and his music on records such as
Deal Gone Down and Savage Amusement became more rock orientated.
Pleasures Of The Street, a live album, was produced by Don Nix and
Rick Kemp and Keef Hatley. This album was recorded in Europe where
Michael enjoyed particular popularity. During the early nineties,
Michael suffered from ill health but is now back on top form with The
Twisted Road. This album is possibly his finest offering since the
classic Fully Qualified Survivor.
Pip Pyle/Equipe Out - Erstwhile member of "The Canterbury Scene", Pip
Pyle has played drums with Gong, Hatfield and the North, National
Health, In Cahoots, Kevin Ayres, etc. Pip moved to France to join
Gong in 1971 and was featured on drums and breakage on Camembert
Electrique. This was the album which landed them a deal with Virgin
Records. Pip assembled a group of musicians for this project, whose
backgrounds included Soft Machine and Gong. As a result Equipe Out is
a startling fusion of jazz, rock and beyond.
Asia/Rare - With over ten million album sales to their credit, Asia
continued to rock the music scene throughout the 90's. John Payne,
(bassist/vocalist), and Geoff Downes steered the band through three
powerful studio albums, (Aqua, Aria and Arena), there was also a trio
of live recordings and endless live dates throughout the world.
Downes and Payne took a break from the road after a decade of making
music together, to devote their energies to soundtrack work. There
were two projects of note which occupied their time. The first of
these projects was music for a David Attenborough film called 'Salmon:
Against The Tides'. This was an elegant and charming soundtrack, with
the music adding majesty and class to the underwater world portrayed
in the film. The second project was music for a Cd Rom vidio game
which was never released due to a creative dispute with the producers.
Unlike their previous efforts, it is hard driving Asia music with a
metallic edge.
Linda Merrick & Chris Thorpe/The Hemlock Stone - Linda Merrick is
regarded as one of Europe's leading clarinet players and has for many
years been the source of a huge influx of new music. She has had over
50 commissions for her contemporary music ensemble Sounds Positive and
many more for her work as a solo player. Working with Chris Thorpe,
producer and technologist, Linda has included eight compositions by
both established and exciting new composers. Some of the compositions
are solo works and others include the combination of clarinet and
electronics. All tracks are delivered in a striking and inspirational
style.
Tangerine Dream/Great Wall of China - Tangerine Dream's soundtrack to
this international video production was inspired by breathtaking
pictures of The Great Wall of China. This recording mirrors the
fascination for one of the biggest man-made constructions built around
700 B.C. The Great Wall Of China spans a total of 50,000 km, in length
and was built to defend the Chinese provinces from rival tribes. The
11 compositions on this album show the many facets of the 3,000 years
of history of the wall.
Tim Blake/Magick - Keyboard player Tim Blake has performed with both
Gong and Hawkwind. Tim's innovative synthesizer and keyboard work can
be heard on albums such as Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and Levitation.
Tim Blake formed 'Crystal Machine' in the late '70's which was a
highly elaborate set up of banks of synthesizers and electronic
gadgetry which was combined with stunning laser and lighting effects.
Two albums, Crystal Machine and New Jersulem followed to much critical
acclaim. These albums also held continental chart positions. Magick
is a collection of songs and music with a sequencer, keyboard and a
microphone. The recording is live and direct to stereo and was made
on a moonlit night in Tim's windmill in Brittany capturing just the
magick.
Evelyn Tubb, Richard Burnett, Lesley Schatzberger/The Journey Of Love
Through Life - The Journey Of Love Through Life is of the Early Music
genre, which is a well established and popular form within the UK.
The musicians are Evelyn Tubb (soprano), Richard Burnett (fortepiano)
and Lesley Schatzberger (clarinet). The recording features scores by
Schumann, Schubert, Spohr and Lachner, with production by Michael
Fields.
RNCM Wind Orchestra/Metropolis - The Royal Northern College of Music
Wind Orchestra was formed just over fifteen years ago and is now
recognised as one of the leading conservatoire ensembles in the world.
In 1994, the ensemble gave no less than seven broadcasts for Radio 3
and Radio 2. At the Cheltenham Festival they joined forces with the
international virtuoso Evelyn Glennie. The RNCM have performed over
500 works and lead the field in commissioning new works and rescuing
old and have made very successful tours of France and Japan.
Hawkwind/In Your Area - This is a brand new album from the kings of
space rock consisting of six live tracks and eight studio numbers
recorded at Ancient Belgique in Brussels and produced by original
founding member Dave Brock. Includes versions of Nik Turner's
"Brainstorm," and tracks "Aerospace Age Inferno" and "First Landing On
Medusa" which were co - written by Bob Calvert. The band recently
completed a sell out low key tour, more dates are to follow including
shows at Brixton Academy which will include original members.
Tangerine Dream/Tang-Go - Tang-Go is a double cd compilation of 24
tracks from their own TDI label, covering the period 1990 to 2000.
Compiled by the band members themselves, this is an ideal introduction
to the magic of Tangerine Dream's music.
Joe Cocker/Vance Arnold & The Avengers Live 1963 - This unique package
contains the story and sounds of a young Joe Cocker, fronting his
first band Vance Arnold And The Avengers. This recording was made
live on stage during 1963 at the Esquire Club in Sheffield, by his
first manager and mentor Terry Thornton. The idea was to help promote
the act, obtain work in London and gain a recording contract. The
Esquire Club is now known as The Leadmill and during it's sixties
heyday had a membership of 27,000 and featured acts included The Small
Faces, Georgie Fame, Zoot Money, Alan Price, Dave Berry and Rod
Stewart. Joe secured a contract with Decca in 1964, released the
single "I'll Cry Instead" watched it fail to sell and returned to the
gas trade. Two years later he formed The Grease Band and in 1968
their first single "Marjorine" was a minor hit. Later in the year he
released "With A Little Help From My Friends" which went straight to
the top of the charts and proved to be an international success.
Anthony Moore/World Service - Anthony began his recording career
working in experimental film and music. He released two avant garde
solo albums in the early seventies. When Polydor Germany refused to
release the third project, he teamed up with Dagmar Krause and Peter
Blegvad to form Slapp Happy who joined forces with German pioneers
Faust to release their debut album in 1972 (Sort Of...). By 1974, the
band had signed to Virgin, aquired a cult following of fans, critics
and musicians such as Henry Cow and Robert Wyatt. Anthony departed
in 1975, whereby Virgin failed to turn him into a pop star. He then
signed to cutting edge indie label Do - It, releasing Flying Doesn't
Help in 1979 and World Service in 1981. He eventually found more
lucrative work writing lyrics for Pink Floyd, when original member
Roger Waters departed. Similar in style to other mavericks like John
Cale and Kevin Ayers with many lyrical twists.
Claire Hamill/Touch Paper - Singer and writer Claire Hamill's first
recordings emerged in the early seventies to widespread critical
acclaim. She was often likened to Joni Mitchell for her forthright
lyrics and inventive musicianship. On Touch Paper she is joined by
Chris Squire from Yes and Gary Newman amongst others. This is the
first time that this recording has been made available on compact
disc.
Gordon Giltrap/Janschology - Gordon Giltrap represents a unique
British musical talent having evolved a guitar style, which is as
individual as his music is recognisable. His astonishing technique
has enabled him to compose some of the most stunning acoustic guitar
works of recent decades. On this mini - album, Gordon plays tribute
to his great friend and one of his formative influences, the
innovative guitar stylist Bert Jansch. Jansch has influenced many
other guitarists including Pete Townsend, Johnny Marr, Roy Harper,
Thurston Moore, John Renbourn, Jimmy Page and Bernard Butler who all
pay tribute to him in a forthcoming Channel 4 documentary. Around the
same time Colin Harper's biography of Bert will be launched. Gordon
is featured in the documentary and book and has Bert as his special
guest when he plays London's Purcell Room on 2nd May.
Jah Wobble’s Invaders of the Heart/The Celtic Poets - Everyone owns a
record that Jah Wobble has played on. This maverick bass player first
found his musical feet with Public Image Ltd (PIL), creating melodic
bass lines as striking and memorable as the Metal Box they came in.
Wobble soon found himself on his own path of musical discovery. Two
albums ‘Betrayal’ and ‘Snake Charmer’, working with Can’s Czukay and
Leiezeit and U2’s Edge, only hinted at the future ‘world music’
influences. Celtic Poets is musical meditations with a celtic theme.
Brendan Kennelly, Louis MacNeice and Shane MacGowan all have their
poems brought to life by the warm gravel voice of Ronnie (Dubliners)
Drew. Celtic pipes may set an Irish scene but sitars, pi-saw,
trumpet and chinese harp give an organic world flavour. This is world
folk music with a celtic soul and visionary poetry.
Jah Wobble and The Invaders of the Heart/Full Moon Over The Shopping
Mall - Full Moon Over The Shopping Mall could be a tranced out laid
back deep space. Adding Baluji Shirvastav on tablas, sitar and voice
to the deep space line up, Full Moon has a flowing creative landscape
which you can let slide under you as you travel on a spiritual dub.
Dream like melodies glide over undulating rhythms and sensual at times
seraphic soundscapes, seduce you into a place where only the true
believers lie. There should be more albums like this.
Jah Wobble/Requiem - Certainly his most ambitious record to date.
Testing both his musical and spiritual limits, Requiem is closer to
Gorecki than PIL. With five distinct movements, and only a hint of
trademark bass playing, you travel through opening dark overtures to
choral celebrations and end with the proverbial light of new life. If
proof were ever needed of Wobble’s skill of composition, then this is
it.
Jah Wobble/Umbra Sumus - Umbra Sumus ‘We Are Shadows’ is at times
close to the classic Invaders sound. A hybrid of inimitable grooves.
Who else, but Wobble, could have the 6:45 train to Bethnal Green
providing a rhythm track. Relaxing atmospherics of ‘Organ Meditation’
and ‘Chela’ sit alongside the jazz influences of Harry Beckets’
trumpet providing echoes of Don Cherry on ‘Paternal Kindness’ and
‘Limehouse Cut’. Within these shadows lie tracks for every mood and
taste.
Jah Wobble presents Zi Lan Liao/The Five Tone Dragon - Presenting Zi
Lan Liao, acclaimed Chinese instrumentalist. Five Tone Dragon leap out
at you like a friendly serpent from the Yengtze riverbeds. Yet it is
the track ‘The River’ which encapsulates the mind with a myriad of
melodies all wrapped in luscious orchestration and rhythms that beat
with the spirit of the heart. More eloquent than other albums, yet
more dangerous with it’s intoxicating subtleties. This is the one that
you carry with you into your dreams.
