Subject: Tribute to Fred Berry and Gus Gustavson May 21, at the College of San Mateo
On Wednesday, May 21st there will be a musical tribute to educators
Fred Berry and Gus Gustavson at the Little Theater at the College of
San Mateo at 7:30pm.  Both of them are retiring this year after 30 +
years of service to the musical community.  Fred Berry is a veteran
trumpet player here in the SF Bay Area who's performance credits
include: Bob James, Hubert Laws, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett and a host
of other well know artists.  He also was one of the original members
of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and has influenced many of the working
trumpet players here as well as educators in the past 30 years. He is
the conductor of the Stanford Jazz Orchestra and musical director of
the Northern California version of the Louie Bellson Orchestra.
Gus is a pianist who can dwell in the jazz and classical worlds
equally as well and has been a mainstay here for 30 + years also.
Performing at this event will be the College of San Mateo evening big
band led by Mike Galisetus, a trio set featuring Gus, bassist Mike
Zisman, drummer Kelly Fasman and to top off the evening will be a set
by the CSM Alumni Big Band conducted by myself and will include in the
trumpet section, Tim Acosta, Larry Souza, Bill Theurer, Mike Galisetus
and John Capobianco.  Five of the finest players active in our local
music scene.  There will be an added appearance by the local legendary
trumpeter Allen Smith.  For those of you who have never heard Allen
play.....this is your chance.  Don't miss it.
This will be an evening not to to be missed!!!  The event is free to
the public.  Please join us in paying tribute to two of the bay area's
finest jazz (and classical) educators.  For more information, email me
