Just wanted to see who everyone here is listening to of the cats that are
out there right now. Maybe there's someone I'm not hip to that I need to
check out.

Well, such is the state of jazz that I'm mainly listening mainly dead
guys. I've been on a Paul Desmond kick that I can't shake (not with
Brubeck). Chet Baker too. A fabulous new re-release of Chet's is
"Chet Is Back." If there are any doubters as to Chets place as one of
the greatest trumpet players that ever lived-- I invite you to give
this recording a listen. I've also been greatly enjoying Henry "Red"
Allen's "World on a String." Jazz just dosn't get better than that...
But I also love all the legendary greats, particularly Miles and Ben
Webster.

For new guys Dave Douglas is probably the hottest player right now.
He's really moved music forward. I saw him live and the dude can flat
out play the trumpet. I'd recommend "Soul On Soul" as an intro to
Dave. For more mainstream players I think Nicholas Payton is an
unbelievable player. Terrance Blanchard has also really blossomed and
is making some of the most exciting jazz going. All of his albums are
excellent Chris Potter (sax) is the newest young gun-- what a talent
(try "Concentric Circles"). Tim Hagans is also an overlooked
treasure-- check out his wild "Imagination" albums where he tips his
hat to the electric Miles era-- incredible trumpet playing. You can
read up on some of these guys and others at the excellent site
allmusic.com.

I recommend Jon Faddis for trumpet... Never listened to him much until he
did a guest performer concert with the jazz band I was in. He does a lot of
Dizzy stuff.

Mark,

Have you checked out Scott Wendholt, Jim Rotondi, and Joe Magnarelli? Scott
is my favorite. Unbelievable player, and a hell of a guy. I definitely
agree with you on everyone you mentioned.

Yeah he's something else. My teacher did a gig with him as the guest artist
and during the gig the lead player couldn't find one of the charts. Faddis
came over and played it from memory. Can't remember what tune. Darn it.

Not necessarily new, but maybe not as known as some:

John Swana
Ryan Kizor
Nicholas Payton (ok, he's pretty well known but he's such a monster)
Carl Saunders
Richie Vitale

Here are some guys(and gal) I like:
Phil Grenadier(bass player Larry's bro) from Boston
Tom Williams from Washington DC
Mike Olmos, a 23 year old MF who is one of the best jazz soloists to
come out of the SF Bay Area since Tom Harrel. We'll all be buying
his cd's in the near future IMHO
Ray Vega, my favorite latin jazz tpt player.
Terumasa Hino
Tomonara Hara
Jim Zollar
Ralph Alessi
Warren Gale
Steve Campos
Allen Smith
Marcus Belgrave
and Ingrid Jensen. She's incredible.

Peace,

It's great to see John Swana mentioned. He is one of my favorite jazz
trumpeters on the scene. I believe he is based in Philly which may be
why some people may not have heard of him. He has some nice albums
out on the Criss Cross label; all of which are recommended.

One relative new comer to the jazz scene that I haven't seen mentioned
yet in this thread is Terell Stafford. I saw him perform live as a
guest soloist with a local big band about a year ago and was instantly
stunned with his command of the horn. A wonderfully lyrical player
with a nice big sound!
Check out his album entitled "Fields of Gold" on Nagel Heyer. Keep an
eye (and ear) out for this guy.

On his album "Centripetal Force", he takes an incredibly cool solo on "Old
Devil Moon". I heard it on the radio, and immediately bought that album and
"Time To Let Go". Wonderful playing! Stafford also does some nice stuff on
Victor Lewis' album "Eeeyyess!!"
