itch again and am sliding back into the scene. Looks like most of the
bretheren is still here and good to see.

Hey Pete! Took some time off from drumming to focus on career
(Day Job) and some other stuff I needed to do with family, house,
etc. I had gotten really frustrated also dealing with musicians in
general in my area...usual stuff...lack of responsibility, dedication,
etc. I have been back into golf and played in the US Amateur and
Local qualifiers for the Open this past year and was a finalist for
the TV show "The Big Break" on the golf channel. Hopefully, I will
make the show on the next cycle which looks promising. If you think
drumming is an expensive hobby, try golf. Sheesh. I had been out of
competitive golf since college, but found my way back in the last two
years.
Anyway...back interested in playing some if even just to continue
developing the chops at home. Kit shopping now and have fuond afew
good prospects... a Mapex Saturn 12,16,24, and a 6x13 Walnut snare
for $850....and a Gretsch renown 8,10,12,14,22 for $799. I am leanign
to the Mapex as I really just want a four piece and dig the idea of a
24. Dunno...still debating. Ever played either one?

I have played a renown and they are pretty nice. ddrum Dominion is in
the same ballpark quality wise and they have kits with a 24x20 kick! I
can't even imagine what that would sound like. They run about half the
price new as the Gretsch.

My local drum shop recently had a ddrum Bubinga kit in the showroom that absolutely knocked
my socks off. It had a 10/12 rack combo with 14/16 floor (not hanging) toms, and a deep 22"
kick (the exact configuration I normally play). It was *gorgeous* and sounded as good as it
looked, and the $1400 price tag didn't seem that bad at all (even though it could probably
be had for cheaper). Very nice drums.

That's a great deal on the Mapex Saturn kit. I have a Mapex Orion kit
(their top line before they introduced the Saturn). It's great high-
end stuff and that's a great price.

any real comparison. There seems to be a huge bottleneck of kits aimed at
the $1000 mark right now and I am not familiar with many of them at all.
DDrum, OCDP, Pork Pie, Vision, Meridian, Starworks, Epic, etc. I drop out
for two years and the mfg's go crazy with new lines.
Went with the Saturn's. $850 including some hardware and a Black
Panther Deep Forrest snare drum...bought it local, supported the mom and pop
and did nto have to worry about the samsonite apes destroying my drums in
the Fedex van as in the past. Plus I think they will most likely not be
worth less than I paid. I could not get comfortable with any of the other
ones or find any really good deals other than this one on higher end stuff.
Now, to find some hi hats... :)

Wow -- that Deep Forest snare is a steal with that kit. I see those
things on eBay for 300-400 alone. You've got a great pro-level set up
there for an excellent price. I paid $300 for a 6.5 x 14 Deep Forest
and $1800 for a 6-piece Mapex Orion kit (plus cases and hardware) and
I know I got a good deal.

Sounds lie a deal!
For the record teh Duotone drums and the maple stuff, AMX series, and
lower are pretty much like everything else out there. The Dominion Ash
or the Dios lines are the better stuff.

plies. I had to cut down my tom mount posts because they were too
long to mount my toms low enough on the kick, but besides that they
sound perfect. The walnut gives them a nice low full sound, with the
warmth of a maple shell. I just put some smooth white Emp's on them
and love 'em.
Oh yeah - good to see everyone's still around and chatting in
here. :-) I just got onto Facebook and a couple of the regs here
already found me, reminded me to poke my nose in and say hey!
