I bought one those cheap "Sound Percussion" kits from Guitar Center, to
use as a rehearsal kit, when it was $150.
It actually sounds decent and is much better quality than the "toy" drum
sets you see at a lot of stores.

The pedal is pretty light (I use it for a cowbell mount).
But you can always get a lighter spring for any pedal.

My only concern is that the bass drum is really small (16" diameter),
so the whole kit might only be large enough for 2 or 3 years.

I guess we could probably get at least $100 for it on Craig's List
when he outgrows it, whereas a cheaper one would just end up getting

Good job, those will be great for learning on.
You can play a 16 you're whole life. It's not the size, but the
application.
When he gets into a band or starts gigging, he'll probably need
something bigger just for tone and volume.
