What's the regular key, if any, for this tune? G minor?

Are these the right changes? (courtesy of Al Stephens and DejaNews

I think it's usually played in Cm/Eb.

I believe that's the key Jack Wilkins played it in
on "Trioart." And the sheet I have on it is also in Cm/Eb.

Joey,

I don't know what the *original* key is, but it seems to me that the
usual key is Eb (I think of it more as Eb than C minor)

Last week at Montreux we were trying to play as many tunes as we could
possibly think of so we wouldn't be repeating much. I thought to play
this tune so I wrote out some changes for my bassist. The are four
bars I'm not too sure about though, starting with the Ab7 in the first
ending. It works ok but I think it can be improved. Here is what I
wrote down last week:

Cm / / / | Dm7b5 / G7 / | Cm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / |
Gm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / | Gm / / / | Fm / Bb7 / |
Eb / / / | Bbm / Eb7 / | Ab7 / / / | Ab7 / / / |
Ebm / / / | Ab7 / / / | Dm7b5 / / / | G7 / / / |

Cm / / / | Dm7b5 / G7 / | Cm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / |
Gm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / | Gm / / / | Fm / Bb7 / |
Eb / / / | Bbm / C7+ / | Fm / / / | Abm / / / |
Eb / / / | Gm / C7 / | Fm / Bb7 / | Eb / (Dm7b5 G7) ||

I've seen a number of wildly different charts to this song, but I've
never seen one that entirely worked to my ear. -my own chart above
included :) I'd be interested in seeing other's variations too.

I Have this book in my library called the Musician's Handbook:STANDARD
DANCE MUSIC GUIDE ....a classified and alphabetical list of the world's
best and most popular STANDARD SONGS with their ORIGINAL KEYS and
STARTING NOTES. The book first appeared in 1939 and it's final printing
was in 1958. There is no music script in the book it's categories of
music, song titles and their original or standard key along with the
starting note.

For How deep is the Ocean?

It lists the original key ( I wonder is original synonymous with
standard?) as: F

Seldom is original the same as standard...

Take a tune like Softly as in a morning sunrise....Orginal key is
Em...Standard Key is Cm.
My Funny valentine? Orinal Key is like....D I believe....

All those all show tunes were oringinally in weird keys to accomadate the
singers.

Like all those big-band charts are in 15 flats to accommodate all those horn
players who have to subtract 13 flats to get into concert key, and to
accommodate whatever the current average upper reach might be for lead
trumpet.

Here are the Oscar Peterson changes (a little more authoritative
than the "Real Book" in my opinion):

Cm / / / | G7+5/B / / / | Cm7/Bb / / | Am7b5 / D7 / |
Gm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / | Gm / Gb7 / | Fm / Bb7 / |
Eb7 / / / | / / / | Ab7 / / / | Ab7 / / / |
B7 / / / | B7 / / / | Bb7 / / / | Dm7b5 / G7+5+9|

Cm / / / | Dm7b5 / G7 / | Cm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / |

Gm / / / | Am7b5 / D7 / | Gm / / / | Fm / Bb7 / |
Eb7 / / / | Gm7b5 / C7+ / | Fm / / / | Abm / Db7 |
Eb / G7+5 | Cm7 / F7 / | Fm / Bb7 / | Eb / (Dm7b5 G7) ||

Let me know how you like these changes.

I heard this line cliche used in a Coleman Hawkins version too

I thought the Eb7, Ab7, B7 changes were 'standard' till
this thread started. The changes I'm using for those
8 bars are

Eb / / / | Bb-7 / Eb7 / | Ab7 / / / | Ab7 / / / |
B7 / / / | B7 / / / | Ab-7 / Db7 / | Dm7b5 / G7+5+9|

I usually play the B7 as lydian dominant, but the Coleman
Hawkins recording is C (or D#) diminished.
