Considered the top soloist with the influential Casa Loma Orchestra
in the early 1930’s, Clarence Hutchenrider was a well-respected
jazz player who was content to mostly be a sideman throughout
his prime years.

Hi,
In 1957 a friend of mine took my wife and me to The Gaslight Club in
N.Y.C., where he was the manager. They had a small house band, of 4 or 5
guys lazily playing for the drinkers and diners. I was amazed to
recognize Clarence Hutchenrider in the group, and I walked over and
introduced myself. I further told him how enamored I was of his playing
with the Casa Loma Orchestra, and named a few pieces. His entire
demeanor changed; he perked up, smiled, and suddenly seemed 20 years
younger than he had. He asked me to name a few songs that I like, and
then he and the boys played them all, and very well indeed. He made our
evening unforgettable. My only regret is that I did not have a tape
recorder with me.
