I got a Dean Markley "Artist Model" contact pickup--you know, the little
wooden disc with the sticky stuff on the side?--for cheap at a yard sale.
It works fine except the white adhesive leaves a residue on the guitar, and
it's quite messy/old/ugly/dirty. Does anybody have suggestions on how I can
replace this adhesive with new, hopefully less damaging sticky stuff? Is it
just Fun-Tak, that stuff you put posters on the wall with, or is there
something better out there?

Some may ask why I'm even using one of these contact pickups at all. My
acoustic has an oval soundhole so while I also have a DM Promag Plus, I
cannot use it--it falls out (or rather in). If anybody has advice on how to
make them play nice together, I'd be grateful for that too. :)

Many thanks,
Dan

Maybe just try double sided scotch tape, or the REMOVABLE poster
squares. Check out if their adhesives would have any effect on
the finish. Anybody know?

PS: I HAVE to mention duct tape just for the fun of it.

I'm sure I've see post which said there was replacement adhesive available.
And I know that at worst you should me finding no more than a sort of smear
you can easily wipe away when you remove the pickup.
I'm surprised nobody has answered yet.
Maybe you could find out who made these in the past and write the
manufacturer. there were two or three kinds. dimarzio, buffalo pickups, etc.
good luck.

I tried double sided tape once - it pulled the finish off when I tried to
remove it, definitely would NOT recommend it.

Fun-tac should work fine, I have used Blu-tac many times, and prefer it to
pickup tac - easier to get off, especially from the inside of the guitar.

Re pickups. I use a mixture of saddle transducer and magnetic, to a stereo
endpin jack (common earth). Some points are:

I use a custom made mixer, but you could go direct to desk inputs (this
will need a piezo preamp), or use an amp with piezo and magnetic inputs, or
by something like a Fishman Blender (a simple resistance mixer will not
work, it has to be active). The piezo input has to be very high impedance,
or you must use a preamp, at least to change the piezo output impedance if
not tone and/or volume. You may need to change phases on one of the inputs
(some preamps/mixers have this facility), but watch how you do this, so
that the live output does not become exposed ie on the magnetic you must
switch the wires right at the pickup, or use double shielding.

Also, stereo coaxial cable may not work (it doesn't with my pickups) - use
"figure-8" coaxial cable or two separate leads for the two pickups.

Hope this helps

Dan-

I can't say what will work in this particular case, but the following
may help. I once tried mounting my McIntyre on the *top* of my
Olson. The McI comes with sticky clay-like material for mounting.
When I took it off, it left a little bit of a mark on the top that
would not come off with gentle rubbing or with Martin guitar polish.
But a little dab of lemon oil (which I got in a small bottle from
a guitar store) on a Viva paper towel got it right off.

Peace,
