1/4 mono to stereo mini problem

Hi,

I have the edirol r-09 stereo digital recorder, the input is a
stereo mini plug.. I use a cord direct to a guitar that has a mono
1/4 jack on one end and a stereo mini plug on the other end.When I
change the pickup selector to bridge pickup, no signal is transmitted
to the edirol. If I use an amp it works fine. Do I have the right
cord?

Also, is there a way to use a y cord with a stereo mini input and
get one instrument on the right channel and another instrument on the
left? I figure I would ask before buying one.
