I thought this was great stuff when I first encountered it a couple of
years ago. For guitarists who have already established basic skills, I
wondered if it wasn't the best all-purpose intro to the issues of
playing jazz on the instrument.
It certainly seems to crystalize the approach that Joe Pass took. I was
in OKC when Pass first came through town (74-ish?) and knew a few guys
who became absolute disciples after the experience.
I wish we had such clear documentation of the vantage points from
Barney Kessel, Jimmy Raney, Howard Roberts and even Ed Bickert, all of
whom did seminars during those same years. I assumed theirs were
predicated on the success Joe was having at the enterprise. Even more,
I'd love something like this from Oscar Moore, Eddie Lang and
particularly George Barnes!
I consider their input very useful--particularly if they diverge in
their views of "what's best" for others!
