this is another test. the video is on my lg spectrum smartphone. based on Rick's suggestion I'm holding the phone sideways this time. light is not so good, audio is in mono, and the guitar player is just doodling, but hey, you gets what you pay for.

Amazing tone. That's acoustic, right? No amp?

thanks Thomas, that Ribbecke Halfling is a tone machine....I am actually using an amp, just a tiny Roland micro bass cube, the one with reverb running on battery power. its on softly, for just a touch of verb, so the phone picking up a blend of acoustic and amp. I wish it was in stereo, however, but that's too much to ask of a phone.

Wow Mark, The quality is amazing! Even the sound (which usually sucks
from most video cameras). This is ultra cool. So I should just walk
right past the iPhones and get an lg?

Has someone tried something like this on an iPhone? Is the audio
conspicuously lesser (assuming now 3rd party mics or anything)?

I just inherited an iPhone 4 (as a friend bought an iPhone 5). Same
way I got my iPhone3 and my iPhone 2 before it. But I must say, I
really like this gizmo a lot better than previous gizmos. Those I only
used as phones. This one wants to be my friend.

well shoot 60 odd seconds of impromptu noodling like I did and post it for the resident experts to opine.

I assume that's a response to my post. Can you loan me that guitar so
we can compare apples to apples?

I could take me a long time to do a real good comparison.

Maybe what everone plays isn't so impressive. Me, I'm playing a solid body.

Speaking of solid-bodies, I finally got around to ordering my Strat Replacement neck :)
I decided to keep the 25 1/2 inch scale length to preserve the "fender sound."
The only big departure from Fender tradition is the 59 roundback and the 6100 (giant) frets recommended by Jim Soloway.
I'll report back when it has been installed and set up!

Description

Item Number: CN12866, Stratocaster®, Warmoth Pro, Right Handed Handed, Maple, Maple Fretboard, 1 11/16" Nut Width, 59 roundback, 6100, Vintage Style (11/32") Tuner Ream, 22 frets, 10-16" Compound Radius, Black Face Dots Inlay, Black Side Dots, White Corian, Clear Satin Nitro, 25-1/2" Scale, Standard 4 Bolt

I did just the opposite when I put a new (reissue) neck on my stratocaster.
I have a 1972 Fender neck with 7.25 radius and skinny frets and big bullet headstock.
I love it.

I've never been able to get any kind of useful sound out of a Stratocaster style guitar, I don't know what it is but when I try it literally feels like i don't know how to play the guitar any more.

Mark I think you'll sound great on any guitar...it's not the guitar. it's the player.

Dom, thanks for the kind words. you know, we hear it's the player and its all in the hands, but I think that's only part of the story. I can only speak for myself, but I find the difference is significant when I play an inspiring instrument, and when all conditions, strings, amplification, room acoustics are perfect. similarly, I'm sure you would agree, it makes a universe of difference who you are playing with. I suppose the mark of a true pro is to sound great no matter how adverse conditions are.

Chuck Wayne could pick up any guitar and play great... 20 years ago I use to think like that. Unless the atmosphere (amp, guitar, room, band. etc.) weren't to my liking, I would have a hard time playing at my best. I found I kept giving myself excuses. When I was able to let go of it all and just play I was much happier with the result.

Interesting of you to bring that up. I recall when I used to get hung up on that shit, a long time ago from now. I had not thought of it until you mentioned it. Life is funny that way, but once the letting go , as you say, kicks in, nothing is a hindrance.

Dom and Tony, I hear what you're saying, I don't disagree, but I think you're making this black and white,or like all or nothing. that's fine, but then there's not really much to talk about . I think there is a continuum, so even the greatest players still have some days where they are even better the last. disagree? if that's the case then I wonder what makes those differences. it could be anything, what you had for breakfast, position of the Stars, or maybe just maybe quality of the gear pays just a little Factor?
