After all these years, it's still extremely annoying.

Yes, check the latest issue of DownBeat in which he talks about sessions that he played on as a studio musician in his pre-Miles days.

"Intolerable" is the word I'd use to describe it. We had a great deal
of diversity in radio back then, but many of the "novelties" should be
played once and then destroyed.

I did a quick search on this just to satisfy my curiosity. McLaughlin had
mentioned this in a Milkowski interview:

http://www.abstractlogix.com/interview_view.php?idno=23

When I saw the subject header I thought you might be alluding to one of my
favorite McLaughlin albums; Time Remembered. He plays Very Early and a bunch
of other Bill Evans tunes. ......joe

I remember that. It was a huge hit. I'm pretty sure the radio cut off that long intro.

Have you ever heard The Pilgrim by Mahavishnu Orchestra? It's much worse. I wasn't even aware that it existed until this year. I think everyone involved knew it was best not to talk about it. It's a strong candidate for Worst Album Ever by a Famous Person.

Yes. I remember the first time I heard Alice's Restaurant. "Oh, crap. Folk
radio is going to be useless for months." I thought to myself. And was
right.

Although I really liked Jaime Brockett's "Titanic" back then.

I think thay you are right. If I remember things right you had the guitar intro and then right into the vocal.Thething was so bad that it stays with you for decades. I defy you to try, now that it has been resurrected, to banish it from your memory. Just when you think it's gone that damn guitar comes in again. Charlie

Do you mean it wasn't there already? I've been thinking about it for
over 40 years! LOL! . . .. that and the f'ing theme from Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang (which my grandparents took me to see when I was a kid).

The rule is, the worse the song, the harder it is to forget (you think
that Madison Avenue didn't know this? I STILL remember every bad jingle
that was on tv when I was growing up).

As for the New Vaudeville Band, I do remember that there was some
involvment with the early Bonzo Do Dah Dog Band (later called the Bonzo
Dog Band, and finally just the Bonzo's) and here's a little bit about
them; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Vaudeville_Band

Being subjected to Merv's "couch audition" after the show was even more painful for Jim.

A little painfully show-bizzy, yes, but Jim made the most of it, and
his little solo is quite nice. No matter what the circumstances, he
still sounds like himself.

I believe Jim Hall was a member of the Merv Griffin band for a year or more just after he got married, so that he could stay of the road for a while.

When I studied with him back in '68, he was on Merv's band along with Chuck Wayne. Two guitarists in the band at the same time.

Herb Ellis also played in that band for a while. I guess if nothing else can be said Merve had good taste when it came to guitarists. Charlie

You just reminded me. That's when I first met Herb. I was performing at Ceasar's Palace with Tom Jones when Merv was filming his show there during the day. I walked in the Green Room with my axe and that's where I met Herb. He said "Let's jam!". So there we were playing the blues together, when Paul Anka walked in and said "You guys sound good." On the same show, I had loaned BB King my Fender Vibrolux. That was a cool time. I met Aretha there too and she wasn't quite yet a star. I got some memories.

It's catchy, fun, and has a cool old-timey vibe.
Still, I listened to it once and I'm fixed for the next ten years :)
