i'm notating a lead sheet, and over a few bars i have a written
melody, but i want to add rhythms for hits for the rhythm section -
i've seen it notated on charts where they'll have the rhythms written
out on the top line or something. i want to keep it all on the single
staff. anybody know how to do this in sibelius? i tried a couple
things, putting in the note and changing the notehead, or changing the
voice, but it never came out quite right...

thanks,
Paul

OK. Highlight the main staff in question. Create an ossia staff above
the main staff. Write the rhythms out on one pitch ('B' middle line is
best if it's a treble staff). Go to notes in the Properties menu.
Highlight the staff again and select option 4 in the drop down note
head menu to alter the shape to a rhythm slash. Finally, you'll need
to hide the lines. In Sib 4 and earlier this was achieved via
Create>Other>Staff Type Change>No Lines (hidden). I don't have a copy
of Sibelius in front of me but from memory, it's now found somewhere
under Create>Other>Instrument Change. Click at the beginning of the
relevant passage and all the lines should disappear leaving only the
rests and note heads. Incidentally, if you want to flip the stems of
the rhythm slashes, select the note heads and click 'x'.

NB: Sibelius has an online help forum that I've used many times -
recommended for questions like this.

You need to put the melody in one layer (with stems going up) and the
rhythm section shot rhythms in another layer with alternate note heads
on the space below the staff.
You could also do it visa versa with the shots using upward stems and
the melody using downward stems if the melody happens to be low.

Looks like this with notehead type #4.
