I stayed away for a long while because the group was getting so much "non-guitar" spam. I don't mind the "gig spam" and such as long is it's relevant to the group (it's kind of nice to know what everyone else is doing). But that movie spam got to be a bit nuts.
So those idiot movie spammers are now finally gone?

They're just gearing up for another onslaught. Like telemarketers,
child pornographers, politicians, and whores, they are always hustling.

There is no "final" to internet noise. I'm sure someone else will consider this a good place for wasting time and calling it "marketing" in the future. The Bollywood crew was preceded by the knock-off purse merchats, and before that (and after) athletic shoes peddlers.
In the case of the Bollywood stuff, they were marketing a site, so all they needed to get was "traffic" not sales. They undoubtedly got some curious traffic in the first week or two, but after that they got nothing.
The amazing thing is that they all spew all this marketing, and in the end they couldn't possible make any money on it compared to the spew. It's like advertising diabetes drugs by stapling flyers to phone poles near a college campus: Dumping their flyers out on the highway would produce higher yield. It's pretty much the opposite of "directed marketing".

But you realize that they're not trying to sell this stuff to *us*. It's all about search engine ranking. Google archives the newsgroups and the number of backlinks is one of the criteria for how something shows up in a Google search. Someone hires these clowns to boost their search engine rankings and if they generate a ton of backlinks all over the internet, it works for awhile (until Google catches on and adjusts the algorithm).

Sounds feasible. It's interesting that I've never hit a bollyspam, knock-off purse or shoe link via google.
