Thanks for the heads up!
Is he playing give me the night or on broadway?
Why does have to be stuck in the early 80s, when we want him to be
stuck in the late 60s?
maybe.....Because the late 60s had WAAAAYYYY better music?
Thats just a guess.
He played both.
Most people know him for his pop hits. Besides, the Roots aren't a jazz
band.
On the whole, I might disagree with you about the late 60s having WAAAAYYYY
better music than the early 80s; there was good and bad during both eras.
are you serious? That's sad...
Sheets, I thought your first post was meant to be a joke. (Fallon, NYC,
Late night, etc,...Give me the Night, On Broadway, etc...)
It was but if he really played that stuff I'm saddened.
I agree with you...there is always good and bad goin on.
I think in benson's case though...there is a pretty sharp cutoff when
he switched over.
I saw im near New Years Eve in boston 1975...he had just started to
bring vocals into his set..he sang masquarade and 1 or 2 others...i
thought it was great to hear him sing a few...and for the rest of his
sets, his playing was through the roof. We were falling out of our
chairs. (he was playing that natural JS he had on breezin..he told us
he 'got a good deal on it')
But by the 80s...he was mostly gone....and probably pretty rich too!
Its all good. (you can see pics of the 1975 show i talk about...it was
at pauls mall in boston...i still have the pick he used that night!)
go to charliex.com
It says that he opens with Breezin. Probably a solo on that!

Well it seems he is known as a "smooth jazz" guitarist:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/107862/late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-mon-nov-9-2009
This will make you feel worse... As Jimmy was introducing him, and saying
how he'd be sitting-in all night, the exchange went somethig like this:
JF: George Benson...this is so cool to have you here...I remember some of
your songs..."On Broadway" (sings the chord riff)
GB: Yup
JF: "Breezin'"...I remember listening to that one
GB: Nods..uh huh..."Gimme the Night"
JF: "Oh yeah, great song" (mimics the high background vocals)
So, it was George who brought up the poppiest of all those tunes. And they
played all three of them.

That's not how I judge music. I don't listen to it thinking that "this
is way hipper" than I'd normally hear on TV.
What's even sadder is that, unless I missed something, it appears
Benson only really got to play during the commercials (I scanned
through the video). After the commercial they'd play maybe four bars
and stop.
The hip hop dancers get featured for four or five minutes. Benson gets
to play for the studio audience during commercials. At least Carson
used to feature jazz musicians once in a while.
benson and rosenwinkel on network television with a youngish audience
seems like a positive thing to me. that's all i'm saying.

Fallon actually seems to have a fairly wide range of musical guests, though
I don't think I've seen any jazz, yet. Regardless, they seem to be doing
what was common when Letterman had the show, which is to have people just
sit in with the band, whether or not they're the featured musical guest.
It's really for the live audience.
The Roots are pretty hip. I wasn't sure what to think at first, but that's
a pretty cool band.
benson playing "give me the night" and "on broadway" ain't a win in my
eyes.
their drummer was on an album a few years back with christian mcbride
that also had martino on a couple cuts. i'm impressed with whoever is
making the decisions about musical stuff on fallon's show. right
after MJ's death, they had erykah badu singing MJ songs with the
roots. then there was rosenwinkel sitting in. now benson.
yeah, it's not 1960 and joe pass isn't in the house band, but it could
be a hell of a lot worse. which is why i think it's pretty idiotic to
bitch about benson coming on and playing his hits.
and this bullshit about benson in the 80's...he was on jimmy smith's
off the top in the 80s. he did tenderly in the 80's. he is still
playing (and singing) his ass off. this all reminds me of the people
who talk shit on wes for doing commercial things towards the end of
his career. benson could throw a rock at a squirrel and it would
sound 20x better than anybody bitching about him on the internet ever
could.

Good point. That's some of the best Benson guitar playing ever.

I actually like his commercial stuff. "Give Me the Night" is a *great*
pop album. He totally deserved to be successful with it. I listened to
it a whole lot when it came out, although I haven't heard it for
probably a quarter century now.

make no mistake, the roots are awesome. they put on a hell of a live
show, have been around for forever, and can really play. ?estlove
plays his ass off and I remember reading an interview years ago with
him, talking about how much time he spent in the woodshed. Also, I
think they are writing all the music they are playing for the fallon
show, since the tv station didn't want to pay royalties on cover
tunes.
wasn't surprised to see rosenwinkel as they are all from philly, but
it was very cool.

if you can't feel joy when listening to this, then wow.

That was cool. And even GB needs to tape his F-holes....
Wow.
McCoy and GB. What a mix!

I might be wrong, but this seems to be the beginnings of a nice flame
war you guys have got going here. If it is, I'm gonna start posting
like a mutha. Nice work guys, and remember, no one can hear you scream
on the internet-computer. Also remember, you're never wrong on the
'net, as long as you have the will to keep typing, you still have a
chance of rebutting..
But RB, most people in this thread think GB is great no matter what
he's doing. Why do you need to get involved at all? Wait for a nice
juicy George Russell thread.
I guess I'd be one of the exceptions. <g>
I'm glad he's got Benson on, even if he is just mostly playing for the
studio audience. But you'll never see the likes of this on Jimmy
Fallon:

And jeez, when the fuck did having a danceable groove and harmonic
qualities that the audience can understand become a crime in jazz?

Maybe, maybe not. You can barely hear it anywhere else current, either.
Some clubs scattered around the world, that's about it.

Narcissistic elitism is its own punishment.
George doesn't have a problem with it and neither should you.
All right. RB, you can tear into him.
Exaggerating others' viewpoints is fun!
Nothing against Benson's funkier hits, and I love the Roots as much as
anyone, and having Rosenwinkel on was awesome, but having Benson there
just to play his "Stairway to Heaven" for commercial breaks is like
having Einstein show up to talk about his hair. Watching him stand up
to take a solo, only to have it cut off because the music was intended
to be a transition for Jimmy to get to his desk was a heartbreak, in
part because the idea of him playing with the Roots and hook up with
Questlove's pocket is enough to make me drool. Sure, it's nice of NBC
to throw out us a cultural bone, but it's only natural to want more.
Okay, back to the hyperbole and misrepresentation, though of course
you no longer participate in this group.

Which, of course was exactly what Joe Pass was doing in Merv Griffin's
band in the late 60's(totally apropos of nothing, but it had to be
said.) Herb Ellis, too, right?
Let's be thankful for that. I've seen that clip. Good grief...an
obnoxious, screaming arrangement (Tommy Newsom, no doubt) and Johnny Mac
doing his usual...chops out the ass, musicality out the window.
Although I prefer GB's pre Breezin' stuff, I still think anything GB
does including his singing is great. He mentions in one of his DVD's
that playing the commercial stuff has enabled him to afford doing
projects like the Big Boss Band project. I wish he would do more of
that stuff.
I can't knock anyone for wanting to make a better life for themselves.
GB has certainly done that by going beyond his jazz boundaries. Wes
did it, but GB took it to another level.
Stan
Mundell Lowe was on the Griffin band too. And don't forget Bob Bain
with Carson, and Tommy Marinucci on Barth Gimble.
Hey Stan! Long time no post.
I'm a little hazy on the details because it was so long ago, but I
remember seeing an "impromptu jazz guitar jam" on Merv Griffin. Merv
said that Herb Ellis (who played in the MG band) had some friends
there visiting and since there was some time left in the show they
should come out and do a number.
So Joe Pass, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell (I think) came out and joined
Herb to do a blues.
They each got to solo.
I also remember seeing Wes on an afternoon talk show (probably Merv)
where Wes sat down for an interview. He was asked about playing
octaves and he picked up his guitar and demonstrated. (!!!)
I got exposed to some amazing stuff on TV back in the old days.

Blasphemer! JM's style aside, that was one KICK-ASS arrangement! Maybe
your big-band taste leans more toward Tea-For-Two in the Glen Miller
style...
Ouch! The truth hurts. I was listing to that and thinking "Drat, there's no
way my big band could play with that much energy." Sigh. Definitely a killer
arrangement.

Because there's no in-between, right?
Dave,
Do you like any up tempo burning or is that a category that you eschew?
Sure. I'm not eschewing the category, just that particular arrangement.
Jaco's Word of Mouth big band comes to mind as a band that could burn, but
which doesn't make me feel--to quote a former teacher of mine--like I'm
being shouted at.
How about guitarists- any come to mind? Pass?
Tom,
It's been awhile. Like others, we usually come back.
Stan
What's the question? What guitarists do I like? Do I like Joe Pass?
