I'm a old school Radio and CD guy. Love MP3s but not into IPods. I
recently upgraded my '90 Miata with new CD receiver. The unit came
with HD (Hi Def) Radio which I had heard of but really didn't
understand.

I'm now as excited about FM radio as I was in the 70's listening to
album rock stations. HD Radio is digital with CD quality sound (on
FM) but the kicker is the additional programming. Many HD channels
have additional channels not available on analog FM.

Example: My local NPR station broadcasts its regular programming in
HD. It also has 2 other HD stations (HD2, HD3) at the same frequency.
One channel is an excellent all music channel ala satellite radio.
These all music channels are on many HD FM stations. There is no fee
for HD Radio.

Now looking for a HD receiver for my home.

Check it out.

Hi Chip,

Is the signal coverage better/worse/same as traditional FM. You have a
pretty good jazz FM station that I get to listen to from Spartanburg/
Charlotte areas, but no further. Living in the mountains is great,
until I turn on the radio...

I'd have to say that its limited reception because it is digital - its
all or nothing like satellite. It doesn't fade out with static like
alalog AM or FM.

BTW, HD AM sounds like FM! Unfortunately, AM is a vast wasteland in
my area.

Check out the station listings to see what is in HD in your area and
see what other HD stations are available that aren't available in
analog FM.

The HD in HD Radio has nothing to do with "High Definition". The signal is
compressed 96kbps. Not even close to "CD quality" and in fact it's worse than
good old fashion analog FM.
