You see how well-kept the place is from the Eggbeater? That was, and I
say WAS due to the year 'round caretaker. His name was Herbie, and he
is and awlways will be one of the high topics of Camp lore.
Herbie drove a old blue Impala; need I say more? Herbie was a "Good
"Ol Boy up North, if that makes any sense.
When I shot my film in 1973 the Camp and the entire country was in a
state of lawlessness, if you can remember that far back. The Camp was
no exception. Herbie was the supreme being when it came to judge, jury
and executioner. Herbie could and would and did fire a round of 00
buckshot right over your head if he didn't like your face or he
thought you were a city boy. If you don't believe me ask our camper
named "perv." He came the closest to dying I think when Herbie let go
of that shot right over his head.
Herbie was a soft-spoken man! We weren't obsessed with Herbie every
day and every minute but we knew he was the ultimate lawmaker on
campus, and beyond. Nobody, and I mean nobody ever fucked with
"Herbie" because we knew what was good for us.
