I have a Guild Artist Award from the 70s. The guitar has a beautiful
acoustic sound and a good magnetic pickup sound. I'd like to be able
to amplify something more like the acoustic sound.

I know the best way is a mic on a stand I also know the downsides--I'm
primarily a bass player, and the upright is a beast to amplify. After
trying MANY things I've ended up sticking with the Schertler Dyn-B. It
sounds he most like a mic, has relatively few feedback issues and no
quacky piezo. But it takes some eq fussing at each gig. It does not
sound like "my bass only louder" and it doesn't not sound exatly like
a mic but the sound qality to troyble ratio is the best I've found.

If anyone cares to share their thoughts on getting a good acoustic
archtop sound, I'd be grateful. I know about the AMT s15g. That is one
pricey mofo! Does it sound as good as it costs?

try the david gage realist for your upright. and I think he can make
a special version of it for your archtop.

Thanks Nate--I have a realist, didn't like it on my bass and it sits
in in a drawer. I wonder if I could just cut it down and fit it under
the guitar bridge. Hmmmm

On a related topic: I have a nice acoustic guitar now, but it has no
pickup. I began toying again with the idea of buying a Shertler for
use on the acoustic guitar, as well as other acoustic stringed
instruments; cavaquinho, ukulele, PR cuatro, etc. Is this feasible
with just the one Shertler?

I looked into this--if you look at schertler's website you can see the
specs for the various "DYN" models. They are not all that different,
and they make on called the "basik" that is designed to do exactly
that. The only thing that would make me hesitate is moving it around.
I found the sweet spot on the top of my bass about 3 years ago, and
it's never moved since

I would like to ask you guys what you think about K&K pickups,
especially the Trinity, which is a combination of an internal mic with
four head pickups:

http://www.kksound.com/trinitywestern.html

I know they're highly regarded among acoustic guitarists, but I've
never heard of anyone using them on an archtop. Is there any reason
why this shouldn't work?

I had a trinity pickup on my bass for a while and didn't like it. I
never got enough volume from the mic to make it worthwhile, and I was
always distracted figeting between the two pickups, then the mic would
start feeding back, etc. etc. The bass model uses a different piezo,
but I never liked the mic

The Realist is remarkable for an upright bass- I heard one a couple
weekends ago and was astonished- warm, clear, no quack at all. Too bad
there isn't one for classicals.

You should spend some time on the double bass discussion lists--every
type and kind of pickup/mic and combination thereof known to man is
tried. The realist works great for some people, but on my bass it was
one of my least favorite pickups. It's sitting in a drawer and I may
try it on the Guild

You might take a look at <http://www.pick-uptheworld.com/archtop.htm>. I
have the stereo model that the owner (David Enke) made for me. I use it
on a custom Leach archtop that is straight acoustic. I sent David the
dimensions of the feet of my bridge and he made the pickup elements to
fit under each foot without protruding, except for a small tab on the
end. The sound is very good and perfectly natural, but will not give a
fat electric jazz sound.

David is great to work with but use the telephone number on the web site
if this of interest. He's not good with email.

I wonder why there is no archtop version of this: http://www.zzounds.com/item--FSMAIPD01

Well, the Trinity pickup is advertised as a pickup/internal mic system
for steel-string guitars only. So I'm not surprised it didn't work
well with your bass.

I think this guy gets a very nice sound from it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vREsKeQQ6MM

so I'm still curious how it would work with an acoustic (hand carved)
archtop.

Has anyone mentioned this one?
